AURORA -- Another year, another sport for coach Trevor Bodine.

The highly successful North Marion girls basketball coach -- who also has coached soccer, baseball and football in his 18-year career – has taken over the school’s volleyball team.

“Oh, I’m loving it. It’s going to be a fun year. I’m excited,” Bodine said. “I told the girls I didn’t take this program over to watch it fail. … I took it over to get over the hump that they met last year.

“They won the league and got bounced. So my job, how I’m looking at it, is to get them over the hump and get to the state tournament.”

Bodine has guided North Marion’s girls basketball team to 62 wins and three 4A tournament appearances since taking over in 2016. He inherits a volleyball team that shared the Tri-Valley Conference title with Estacada but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Sweet Home.

Bodine said he has a firm grasp of the motivational, leadership and relationship aspects of coaching, but he is adjusting to the Xs and Os and terminology of volleyball.

He joked that with basketball, it would take him a few minutes on the first day of tryouts to see who will make the varsity, but it is different with volleyball. He is leaning on the expertise of JV coach Tim Netter and JV2 coach Lindy Wing.

“Those are the parts I’m learning from them, and where to put the girls to be successful,” said Bodine, who will continue to coach the girls basketball team. “Varsity is probably the easiest, because if you’re athletic and you can jump, you can move and you can hit, that’s kind of easy to see from the sideline.”
