AMITY --You are only as good as the line in front of you.

Friday night, Amity’s line proved to be the difference in a 54-22 win over visiting Coquille. The Warriors (3-1), ranked fifth in 3A, executed their wing-T to rush for 337 yards and turn back the Red Devils (3-1), ranked third in 2A.

“We were planning to work on the outside, but it didn’t end up working, so we took it inside,” Amity tackle Jacob Bernards said. “We stepped our game up to the next level.”

Amity’s Russel Brown found yardage inside early to set up two touchdown runs by Cody Dyche, staking the Warriors to a 16-0 lead.

Coquille was within 24-16 at half as it had success running with Caiden Yates, Gunner Yates and Ean Smith, who each broke off runs of 20 yards or more.

Dyche, who also plays linebacker, admitted that he should have watched more film on the Red Devils backs ahead of time. Caiden Yates rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries while Gunner Yates rushed for 71 yards on six carries for the Coquille, which rushed for 224 yards.

“I should have because I didn’t know how great of a running backs they were,” Dyche said. “I think (Caiden Yates) is personally the hardest player I’ve had to tackle. He’s a great running back. (Gunner Yates) was just super shifty and it was super hard to tackle.”

Amity pulled away with its running game in the second half. Dyche finished with 146 yards on 19 carries and Brown had 157 yards on 23 carries.

It was the second consecutive 50-point game for Amity after a 32-14 loss to Onalaska, Wash.

“I think we just came in with our heads up and wanted to win a football game. That’s it,” Amity center Ashton Pappas said.

Amity will carry momentum into its Special District 1-West opener next week against Taft.

“It was great. I definitely saw glimpses of last year’s line tonight,” Dyche said. “We just executed everything really well in this game. It just makes your job as a running back easier when your line is just cruising down field, moving bodies and getting in front of people creating lanes. It’s perfect.”
