Freshman Braden Marthaller is the chief thief for Toledo's running Boomers

At least every other week during the spring season, we’ll talk some Oregon high school baseball. This is the place!

Exciting Tuesday in 6A

When Monday’s OSAAtoday coaches polls came out on Monday, this is what 6A looked like:

1. Sunset

2. Sprague

3. West Linn

4. South Salem

5. Jesuit

6. Lake Oswego

7. Ida B. Wells

8. Tualatin

9. Sandy

10. Barlow

Now check out the three-game series’ this week, starting with Tuesday’s openers:

No. 1 Sunset v. No. 5 Jesuit

No. 2 Sprague v. No. 4 South Salem

No. 3 West Linn v. No. 6 Lake Oswego

No. 9 Sandy v. No. 10 Barlow

Though I do not know with absolute certainty, I feel fairly comfortable asserting that this is the first time ever that four three-game series’ will be played in one week involving 80 percent of the 6A top 10. The outcomes could decide the teams that prevail in the Metro, Central Valley, Three Rivers and Mt. Hood, as the teams all sit first or second in their league races.

The first salvos were fired yesterday. Here’s what happened:

No. 1 Sunset 3, No. 5 Jesuit 2: Junior LHP Kruz Schoolcraft homered leading off the game and threw a complete-game five-hitter, striking out 10, in Sunset’s win. Jesuit took the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two unearned runs, but Sunset (16-0 and the only unbeaten team in the state) answered with two of its own in the fifth, the go-ahead run scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Cole Sauter. Jesuit had chances in both the sixth and seventh innings, but a failed squeeze with runners on the corners and one out in the sixth and a line drive 5-3 double play to end in the game in the seventh ended threats.

No. 4 South Salem 6, No. 2 Sprague 4: South Salem twice rallied from behind to hand Sprague (15-3) its third straight loss. The Saxons’ win spoiled a huge game for Sprague catcher Boyd Messman, who hit two home runs and was robbed of a third. Messman got the scoring started with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, but South Salem scored three in the top of the second to take the lead, aided by RBI singles from Josh Feik and Noah Scharer. The score remained 3-2 South Salem through three innings, but only because Scharer reached over the center field fence to deny Messman a three-run homer. Sprague tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, on Henry Mhoon’s RBI single; and took the lead in the fifth on Messman’s solo shot to left. Down a run, it was South Salem’s turn to answer. With the bases loaded and one out, Gavin Price lined a triple to the fence in left to clear the bases and give the Saxons the lead for good. Kevin Semm worked the final four innings for the win in relief.

No. 3 West Linn 8, No. 6 Lake Oswego 2: West Linn scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game. Gabe Howard went the distance on the mound for the Lions, allowing just three hits. One of those hits was a home run by Karsten Krebs in the first, which staked the Lakers to a 2-0 lead. Elliott Wear was masterful for LO, as he set down the first 10 batters for West Linn before a Mitch Rowe double and Danny Wideman two-out single in the fourth plated the Lions’ first run. What had been a tense game turned into a rout when West Linn had four straight hits and sent 11 total to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

No. 9 Sandy 1, No. 10 Barlow 0: A classic pitcher’s duel between Sandy RHP Matt Kosderka and Barlow RHP River Hamilton was determined in the first when two Barlow errors allowed Sandy to score its only run. Kosderka was masterful, allowing only two hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out nine. Hamilton also went seven full, yielding just one hit and two walks while fanning 12. “Outside of Kosderka, he’s the best pitcher I’ve seen from Oregon this year,” said Sandy head coach Eric Fogle.

The games continue Wednesday and Friday for all but Sandy/Barlow, which are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Grand theft

Toledo is 8-5 on the season after Monday’s 12-2 win over Gold Beach. The Boomers, who only won seven times last year, are thriving on the base paths, with 173 steals through the team’s first 13 games. All nine regulars have stolen 10 or more, with freshman Braden Marthaller currently leading the state with 31.

Toledo is averaging an astounding 13 steals per game. With seven regular-season games remaining, the Oregon state record of 217 set by St. Mary’s of Medford in 2013 is well within reach. The Boomers could, if they get to 277 or more, break into the top 12 nationally all-time according to NFHS records.

Toledo is having success, and the players are re-discovering their love of the sport, despite a very young roster that includes only one senior and five freshmen.

News and notes

Klamath Union / Crosspoint Christian ended an 18-game losing streak on the field to Mazama with a 16-8 and 13-11 doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the first wins on the field for the Pelicans since 2016 and the first sweep over the Vikings in a dozen years.

***

Sophomore right Declan O’Brien of La Salle Prep shut out Wilsonville on Friday in the rubber match of the series between the Northwest Oregon Conference rivals. O’Brien allowed just one walk and yielded only one infield hit. O’Brien is now 3-0 on the year with a 1.40 ERA.

***

Central Catholic took two of three from Sandy last week, including 1-0 in the opener on April 16. In that game. Spencer Marron threw 8.1 innings and struck out 10. Langston Kaptur had the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th. Two days later, Cameron Ames twirled a gem of his own for the Rams in a 4-1 win. The senior RHP tossed a complete-game four hitter, with 7 Ks, in the 4-1 win.

STATS CATEGORIES

The idea for our 2024 stats categories is to recognize only those players achieving at the highest levels in the state of Oregon. They are not designed to produce massive, labor-intensive lists.

Any varsity baseball coach wanting to add someone to a list may email johnt@osaa.org, list the category and supply the name of a player using the specific format for the category.
