4A No. 1 Henley is seeking its first state title since 2016
4A No. 1 Henley is seeking its first state title since 2016

At least every other week during the spring season, we’ll talk some Oregon high school baseball. This is the place!

The sting of the Hornets

Yesterday, Henley took a break from overwhelming its Skyline Conference foes to take on a tough Cascade Christian team ranked fifth in 3A. The result for the Klamath Falls, the top-ranked 4A team in the latest OSAAtoday coaches poll, was predictable: a 12-2 rout. That’s how it has gone all year for the Hornets (23-1), who have outscored everyone in 4A by almost 70 runs while yielding only 63 runs total, the fourth fewest number in their classification.

This year’s dominance is a bit surprising, considering that Henley was only 7-8 in non-league games a year ago and lost, 13-6 to Crook County, in the first round of the playoffs.

I think the biggest thing we have this year is a group of leaders who work/play extremely hard and everybody else in our program has to work hard every day to keep up with those guys,” noted second-year head coach Sean Teaters.

Since losing on March 28 by a run to Banks, the No. 2-ranked team in 3A and the team Henley lost to in the state 4A final in 2019; Henley has won 18 straight games, six by shutout and 13, including seven in a row, by 10 or more runs.

“It’s our 2nd year as a coaching staff and that extra year of guys understanding what our expectations are, and understanding the type of team we want to build here, is key,” Teaters explained. “We have a ton of coaching experience on our staff including guys who have won championships and understand what it takes to get there. Joe Tacchini [Former head coach and current assistant] has won championships with Henley in the past so it’s nice for our guys to not have to look very far for proof that what we are saying works. Thankfully for us, we have a group of leaders who have bought in and work/play extremely hard every day, and they show the mental toughness that we want out of our players. It’s easy to coach when the players can hold each other accountable and pick each other up when things don’t go somebody’s way.”

The roster of 15 has been led by junior SS/RHP Mark Carpenter, the team leader in home runs, RBIs, ERA and strike outs. There are many other stars as well, including junior Beau Pyle, sophomore Conner Shively and OF Aiden Hayes, one of six seniors on the squad.

“Mark has been a great player for us,” Teaters said. “He is truly a two-way player who competes hard all of the time. He will be the first to tell you that he is just trying to compete as hard as his teammates. We have a lot of guys who want to be the best and having guys like Beau Pyle in the same pitching rotation has been really beneficial for Mark, because they both want to be the best guy out there. Mark is having a lot of success this year but it’s not an accident. He works very hard all year long and the most important thing is that he LOVES playing baseball. Not only that, but we have a group of leaders like Luke Austin, Aiden Hayes, Owen Harper and Payton Price, who are constantly setting the tone for how we want to work and compete.”

Henley has three games remaining before the playoffs, two against its toughest league foe, Hidden Valley, and the season-ended against Junction City / Triangle Lake, the sixth-ranked team in 4A.

“We are treating them like every other game we play,” Teaters said. “We preach that we are playing against the game of baseball and that we are going to constantly work hard to do things the right way with a tremendous amount of effort and competitiveness no matter who is in the other dugout. We are excited for every game we play because it’s another chance to compete.”

Henley has won nine state titles in program history, tied with The Dalles for most all-time. But it’s been eight years since the Hornets won their last title. Since they captured their first state crown in 1981, Henley has never gone more than eight years between titles. So, if the Hornets win again in 2024, they won’t be making history, but simply repeating it.

Dilly Dalles-ing

Crook County had a chance to wrap up the Tri-Valley League title yesterday at home versus The Dalles and led 5-1 before the Riverhawks stormed back to win, 6-5.

Avery Schwartz went five innings on the mound for The Dalles, giving up two earned runs. He also had the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth. Will Booth threw the final two innings for the Riverhawks, striking out three and getting the win.

The Dalles now sits 12-2 in the league, a half-game ahead of 11-2 Crook County. The Dalles defeated the Cowboys two out of three times, meaning a win at Estacada tomorrow would give the Riverhawks their first league championship since 2002.

Stealing the show

Toledo has had a record-setting week on the base paths.

On Tuesday, the Boomers outlasted Eddyville Charter, 17-10. The team stole 34 bases in the contest, shattering the previous Oregon single-game mark of 21. Every player in the lineup had three or more steals, led by six each from junior Kolby Coxen and freshman Maddox Law, which tied the state single-game record..

One day later, in a 6-1 win over Bandon / Pacific, Toledo stole 11 bases, bringing its season total to a new state record of 228 with three regular-season games remaining.

Oh! Toledo also tossed a no-hitter in the win, thanks to freshmen Riley Tyler and Braden Marthaller. Tyler did most of the heavy lifting, striking out six over 6.2 innings before being lifted due to pitch count.

Toledo is 10-7 so far on the year after winning just seven times all of last season.

The playoffs are coming!

The first playoff games of 2024 are just 11 days away. One hundred six (106) of the 199 teams playing ball in 2024 will qualify for post-season play, as follows:

6A – 32 teams, consisting of the top three teams from seven leagues or conferences, plus the 11 next highest-ranked according the OSAA’s blend of RPI and Colley indices.

4A – 16 teams, consisting of two teams each from six leagues, plus the four winners of play-in games. The play-in games will pit the third-place team from each league plus the next two highest-ranked.

3A – 20 teams, consisting of the top 3-4 teams from the various leagues/districts (17 total), plus the next three highest ranked.

2A/1A -- 22 teams, consisting of the top 3-4 teams from the various leagues/districts (19 total), plus the next three highest ranked.

News and notes

Regis junior Bryson Nygren, who recently committed to Linn-Benton, is virtually untouchable in league play. In his five starts versus Special District 3 opponents, the right hander has three no-hitters and two one-hitters. Wow!

***

Dylan Beals, a senior right hander from Illinois Valley, threw a six-inning, 68-pitch no-no last Friday versus Riddle. He struck out 11 and walked just one.

***

Santiam Christian defeated Amity, 4-1, on Monday in league play.

Josh Riddle (six innings; 15 Ks) and Connor Rahn (one inning; 2 Ks) combined to strike out 17, tying to school single-game record first set in 1993 by Willie Clark versus Nestucca. The duo also yielded just one hit.

***

Ida B. Wells senior Quinn Dufort struck out nine on Tuesday in a 2-1 win over Roosevelt. The lefty has 71 strike outs this year and is within reach of the career school strike out record of 215 set by Joey Mahalic between 2005 and 2007. Mahalic pitched a shutout and hit a home run for Wilson in the 2006 state-championship final. He was Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior and also is the school’s career home run leader.

STATS CATEGORIES

The idea for our 2024 stats categories is to recognize only those players achieving at the highest levels in the state of Oregon. They are not designed to produce massive, labor-intensive lists. The information below is based on the most recent data supplied by high school coaches.

Any varsity baseball coach wanting to add someone to a list may email johnt@osaa.org, list the category and supply the name of a player using the specific format for the category.
