New coach with young team was the right formula for Elgin making Districts for the first time in five years

Elgin on a mission

The Elgin Huskies were 12-13 last year. With just three returning starters and a first-year head coach in Haylee McNall, a culture change was necessary.

At the start of the season, the team set a clear goal for the 2024 season: to make it to districts, a place the program had not been in five years.

Led by a core group of sophomores, the Huskies achieved that goal, finished the regular-season four games above .500 and will head to the 1A state playoffs tomorrow at Glendale.

“Throughout the season, we’ve consistently ranked among the top 20 1A teams,” McNall said. “I’ve always emphasized that wins and losses don’t define us; what truly matters is our commitment, hard work, and showing up every day. That's exactly what this varsity squad has done.

“These incredible girls have been grinding all season, determined to put Elgin on the map. They are hungry to learn and have really 'bought in'. It's easy to coach when you have a team that wants to be there and athletes that want to get better every day. Every day girls ask me to stay late or come in early for extra reps. Their hard work has paid off, and, while we celebrate our achievements, we’re not done yet. As their coach, I couldn’t be prouder, and I’m excited to see what this team can accomplish.”

Friends and foes

Central Christian battled in the championship match of the Mountain Valley League tournament on Friday against North Lake, the Tigers’ toughest league rival but also their friends.

“We have formed a special bond with our rivals and it has touched me to the core,” said Central Christian coach Danielle Benz. “Volleyball is not just about the wins and losses; it is about the life skills that we help our teams develop along the way. I am grateful for North Lake’s amazing coach, team, and families. What a great match and what wonderful lessons we are learning together! Our all league team included three Tigers and two Cowgirls. They were all so proud of each other!”

Undefeateds

The regular season has come to an end for all but 5A and 2A. Those classifications finish up today.

In 5A, South Albany has a lot at stake. The RedHawks, who are 22-0 on the year with only two sets dropped, face off against two-time defending 5A state champion Crescent Valley in Mid-Willamette Conference play. A win and South Albany will complete an unbeaten regular season, the only Oregon school to achieve that feat in 2024.

South Albany swept the Raiders when they first played on Sept. 12, but Crescent Valley has not lost since and will bring a 21-match winning streak to the 6:30 p.m. contest.

Bracketology

Post-season brackets are out in 6A, 3A and 1A, with top seeds identified in 4A and brackets yet to come in 5A and 2A.

The 32-team 6A bracket gets underway tomorrow and features Jesuit, Oregon City, Sprague and Nelson as the top four seeds. Any can win it all. Jesuit defeated Oregon City last year for the title.

The 20-team 3A bracket will have four first-round matches tomorrow. Pleasant Hill, Valley Catholic, Santiam Christian and Dayton are the top four seeds. Sisters defeated Pleasant Hill for the title in 2023. Sisters is the No. 17 overall seed this year and will be one of eight teams playing on Wednesday.

The 32-team 1A bracket gets underway tomorrow and features Crane, Umpqua Valley Christian, Union and Imbler as the top four seeds. Crane defeated St. Paul last year for the title. St. Paul is seeded fifth this season.

The top four seeds in the 4A bracket are Marshfield, Marist Catholic, Crook County and Pendleton. Marist Catholic defeated Marshfield for the state title in 2023.

These are a few of my favorite things…

Why do Oregon high school coaches enjoy the job? They tell us here…

“What I love about coaching high school volleyball is the relationships that I build with the girls and their families. In 15 years of coaching at Cascade, I have seen so many of my girls graduate college, get married, have children and have amazing careers. Helping raise strong women is one of my favorite things to do and coaching allows me to help empower them to be strong women that they are destined to be!” – Cristina Williams, Cascade

“One of my absolute favorite things about coaching is watching ‘the lightbulb’ moment turn on as their volleyball IQ and understanding grows. As a coach you can instruct and you can see the girls' effort to understand but it is not until they physically do what you are asking and it is successful that it truly makes a connection. When that connection is made you see their face light up, put on a BIG smile, and the love of the game has been grown!

“Another aspect of coaching that keeps me coming back year after year, as I have been coaching for at least 29 years, is when I see former players, often years later, and they have a big smile on their face and give me a big hug. Many talk about ways that I had impacted them as an athlete, as a woman, and a believer in Christ that they remember and share with me how it had impacted them. Many of those memories are ones in which I don't specifically remember (many more I do!) but it reminds me that I am making a difference in this little world of mine. I am touching the lives of young girls for the better...it is definitely worth it!” – Julie Bennett, Crosshill Christian

“For me it is about teaching skills that will last beyond the court. Communication, dedication, hard work, perseverance, etc.; we have the opportunity to help mold the future. Make it a good one! -- Danielle Benz, Central Christian

“As a coach, the best part of the profession for me is witnessing God's work in the growth and development of my players both on and off the court. Seeing them overcome challenges, work together as a team, and achieve their goals fills me with a profound sense of fulfillment. It's not just about the wins; it's about the journey, the lessons learned, and giving glory to God along the way.” -- Kassie Denue, East Linn Christian

“My favorite part of coaching is being a front row participant that witnesses the growth in individuals due to their hard work and grit. I love a big win, post-season play, and beating a rival; however, the growth of the whole team or the success of an individual that travels beyond the court will forever be at the top of my list.” – Shannon Steele, Vale

“Watching the players achieve their goals through sheer teamwork. It's an awesome sight to observe them finally come to the understanding that their individual goals or pursuits can't be achieved until they put them aside and play for each other.” – Katie Miller, St. Mary’s, Medford

“Coaching is a true privilege, but at Salem Academy it's even better. It allows me to share my passion for the game while weaving faith into every aspect of what we do. It’s a unique opportunity that blends teaching the sport with nurturing spiritual growth—a combination that can’t be matched. The game itself is an incredible teacher, imparting valuable lessons in resilience, teamwork, confidence, and the ability to meet both mental and physical challenges. And it's fun!” – Kira Copeland, Salem Academy

News and notes

Corvallis edged Silverton in a Mid-Willamette Conference thriller on Oct. 24, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-4. With the win, the Spartans wrapped up third place in the conference behind South Albany and Crescent Valley, the state’s top two 5A teams.

Corvallis, which also defeated Silverton earlier in the year, prevailed in their latest battle because of stamina, said coach Kari Morrow.

“Our team has been conditioning every practice for the entire season; just a simple 15-20 minutes of fitness,” she said. “We ramped up a little in the last weeks to prepare for this situation by doing conditioning and then playing a set to practice playing tired. Many girls said they felt like they could have played more sets following that 5th as they didn't feel tired at all. It is rewarding to see specific preparation pay off and have the girls experience it.”

Match standouts for Corvallis included Malique Sweet, who had 17 kills; Naiya Witinger, who had 23 digs; and Alexa Schnell, who came up with a double-double: 10 kills and 12 digs.

Ione / Arlington (23-7) swept the 1A Big Sky League tournament on Saturday. In the 3-0 win over South Wasco County, the Cardinals served 100 percent as a team, a “huge achievement,” said head coach Dawn Eynetich.

***

Vale came in second behind powerful Burns in district play on Saturday. The Vikings got a huge lift on the right from senior Sadey Klum. Klum has been up and down this year but she hit .333 on Saturday with no errors.

“This athlete wants to be the best she can be and puts in more time than most,” said coach Shannon Steele. “I am proud of her mindful play and how her hard work paid off!”

***

Imbler outlasted Powder Valley and Union on Saturday, each in five sets, to capture the Old Oregon District Tournament.

The Panthers were 9-1 in league play and earned a spot in the tournament semifinals as a consequence. Imbler rode 25 kills from senior OH Rachael Stirewalt to edge Powder Valley to reach the finals. There, the Panthers won the first two sets over Union but dropped the next two. This set up a fifth set for the title.

“Our team demonstrated true grit and determination going into Set 5 to take the lead from the start of the set and didn't look back!” said coach Jennifer Teeter “I am so proud of our team and their fierce competitive attitude.”

Stirewalt had 34 kills in the Union win to help the Panthers take Districts for the first time since 2013, when assistant coach Jacey Teeter was a senior setter.

Top-seeded Crosshill Christian won the Valley Coast Conference Tournament over Monroe. Zoey Baker led the offense with 11 kills while Ellie Bartel had six aces in the final set to clinch the sweep.
