Baseball sprints towards its conclusion

OSAA playoff baseball is like March Madness in college basketball. The brackets are announced and, in no time, we reach the Final Four.

The first playoff games took place eight days ago. A post-season that started with 106 teams across five classifications is now down to 20 heading into today’s semifinals.

There’s still a lot of baseball to be played before champions are heralded on Saturday but so much happened in the last week that will define the 2025 season, including the top four seeds going down in 6A and one of the longest of long shots still alive in 2A/1A.

In case you missed it…

Monday May 26 – 6A, 3A, 2A/1A

In 6A, all but one of the top seeds survived the Round of 32 games. Only Ida B. Wells lost as a home team. Even in that game, the Guardians led South Medford, 2-0, heading to the top of the seventh before the Panthers plated three and went on to win.

The only game pitting a top eight team that was ever really in doubt concerned No. 7 McMinnville. Here is the recap of the Grizzlies’ extra-inning win over Aloha:

No. 7 McMinnville 5, No. 26 Aloha 4 (8 innings) -- McMinnville won an extra-inning thriller that looked like it was going to be a seven-inning no-hitter for Grizzly starter Brayden Mix. But down to the game's last strike, Aloha's Sammy Silva got a base hit to tie the game at 1-1. Aloha then scored three runs in the top of the eighth to put McMinnville on the brink of elimination. With two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, AJ Morrison delivered a two-run double to draw the Grizzlies within one. Kane Sullivan followed with a run-tying double. Drew Bizon's hard ground ball past the first baseman plated the game winner.

In 3A, Banks won a first-round game over McLaughlin. The win was significant because the Braves were the last team into the 20-team field.

No. 20 Banks 8, No. 13 McLoughlin 7 (8 innings) -- Sophomore Cade Wilson celebrated his birthday with a game-tying RBI double in the top of the seventh and sophomore Wyatt Jackson's two-run single one inning later put the Braves up for good. Caleb Bonin got the win in relief, wriggling out of multiple jams. Cris Medina went the first 5.1 innings for Banks and yielded no earned runs while fanning eight.

In 2A/1A, the first-round spotlight shined on Crosspoint Christian and Portland Christian, two of the last four teams to make the 22-team field.

No. 22 Crosspoint Christian 10, No. 11 Regis 0 -- Casey Knecht went five innings, yielding just two hits, and the Crosspoint defense was perfect all game long. Nate Bowman sparked the offense with three hits and three RBIs.

No. 19 Portland Christian 15, No. 14 Union / Cove 14 (8 innings) -- Down 8-3 after five innings, Portland Christian scored eight in the top of the sixth to go ahead, 11-8. Union / Cove responded with five in the bottom of the frame, including a go-ahead three-run homer; to make it 13-11 Bobcats after six. Portland Christian plated three top seven to go ahead, but Union / Cove tied it in the bottom half to send the game to extra innings. PC scored one in the eighth and Joseph Diesel closed the door. Diesel also was 3-for-6 at the plate with five RBIs. Noah Humphrey and Donovan Endres added two hits apiece for the victorious Royals. Diesel and starting pitcher Jack Mazurowski combined to strike out 10.

Tuesday – 5A and 4A

Ridgeview, the No. 4 seed in 5A and Intermountain Conference Champion, lost to No. 13 Dallas.

No. 13 Dallas 11, No. 4 Ridgeview 10 – Dallas rallied from down 5-1 in the second to stun the fourth-seeded Ravens. The Dragons knotted the score at 5-5 in the fourth on an Eli Hess RBI single, only to see Ridgeview reclaim the lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer from Eli Lopez, who previously had an RBI triple. A double by Eli Sledge plated three as part of a five-run Dallas sixth that put the Dragons on top again, 10-9. After Ridgeview tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Dallas error, a Graysen Gardner double put the Dragons ahead once more in the top of the seventh and Jack Strange made it stand up. He tossed the final 2.1 innings, giving up zero earned runs, to get the win.

Seeds held in 4A, but top-seeded Marist Catholic did have a scare.

No. 1 Marist Catholic 5, No. 16 North Marion / Gervais 4 -- Grady Hazen was 2-for-3 with a double, Cash Andrus added two hits, Tanner Mullens had a two-run triple and Marist got homers from both Gianni Lombardi and Raith Huffman in the win. Niko Leyba got the win for the Spartans and Huffman quelled a seventh-inning threat from the Huskies to help Marist escape with the win.

Wednesday – 6A, 3A and 2A/1A

The 6A carnage started in earnest in Round 2, when three-time defending state champion West Linn, the No. 2 overall seed, fell to South Medford, the team that upset Ida B. Wells in Round 1. The game was played one day late than scheduled to accommodate South Medford’s graduation ceremony. For the second straight game, the Panthers trailed going into the top of the seventh before rallying to win.

Top-seeded South Salem, the only undefeated team left in 6A, almost lost in Round 2 as well.

No. 1 South Salem 12, No. 16 Sheldon 11 (8 innings) – Undefeated South Salem trailed, 8-4, heading into the bottom of the 5th before Jackson Buckingham hit a two-run homer. Sawyer Nelson, the state’s long ball leader, went yard to score two one inning later to knot things at 8-8, his second homer of the game. Sheldon scored twice in the 7th to take a 10-8 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 outs, Nelson hit a 2-run single to CF to tie it at 10-10. After Sheldon took an 11-10 lead in the top of the 8th, the Saxons loaded the bases with one out before Kevin Semm singled to left to plate two runs for the walk off 12-11 victory. Wow! Nelson finished with seven RBIs on the day.

Sunset, the No. 11 seed, defeated No. 6 Clackamas, 3-1, but the result would not be considered an upset by most. The Apollos were the No. 1 team in the state in the pre-season coaches poll after finishing runner up to West Linn last year.

In 3A, all of the higher seeds advanced. That was also true in 2A/1A, with one notable exception:

No. 19 Portland Christian 8, No. 3 Clatskanie 3Noah Humphrey threw a complete game, yielding just one earned run, and Evan Satre and Jack Mazurowski combined for four hits and five RBIs for the Royals, who beat a higher-seeded opponent for the second straight game.

Friday – all classifications

South Salem’s luck ran out in the 6A quarterfinals. The Saxons were ambushed by Grant.

No. 9 Grant 12, No. 1 South Salem 0 (5 innings) – Kaeden Cruse hit a three-run homer in the first, as part of a six-RBI night, and Cooper Yudhishthu was brilliant on the mound for the Generals, who knocked off the previously-unbeaten Saxons on the road.

No. 5 Jesuit put a similar stomping on No. 4 Sherwood, 13-0.

The other two games were close, as follows:

No. 11 Sunset 6, No. 3 Central Catholic 4 -- The tandem of Will Slater and Dakota Chun combined to hold the explosive Rams to four runs on six hits in Sunset’s road win. Sunset benefited by an error in the infield with two outs to score three unearned runs in the first inning. The Apollos played small ball in the fourth to plate two more runs then added one more in the fifth after Central Catholic had scored three to make it close. Gavin Riley drove in two for Sunset, which got four strong innings in relief from Chun, the winning pitcher.

No. 7 McMinnville 5, No. 18 South Medford 4 (8 innings) – Tyler Brummitt’s two-out single down the third base line in the bottom of the eighth walked it off for the Grizzlies. South Medford, which had won its previous two playoff games with rallies, trailed 4-2 heading to the top of the seventh and scored two to tie the game. Brayden Mix was the winning pitcher for McMinnville, with 1.2 innings of relief. Brummitt, Cam Hyder, Aaron Rolfe and Bryce Wilson each had two hits for the victors.

In 5A, the four highest remaining seeds all won, but No. 1 Wilsonville, the last remaining undefeated team in the state, had to work hard to advance.

No. 1 Wilsonville 4, No. 8 Corvallis 3 – Wade Hagey launched a ball over the right fielder’s head in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Wildcats stay unbeaten with the walk off win in a game in which they only had three hits. Junior Grady Weiss was huge on the bump for the home team, tossing 4.1 innings and striking out six. .

In 4A, while top-seeded Marist Catholic was having an easier time winning than its opening-round game, the other three quarterfinal games had intrigue and produced two seeding upsets.

No. 5 Henley 2, No. 4 Newport 0 -- Mark Carpenter went 6.2 innings for the Hornets and Corbin Hamilton went 3-for-3 with an RBI and got the final out on the mound. Henley scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and made then stand up. Carpenter allowed only three hits and struck out 10.

No. 7 Pendleton / Nixyaawii 9, No. 2 Junction City 6 – Junction City led in this one, 3-1, aided by a Josh Berry homer; before Keegan Kline’s home run in the top of the fifth helped the Buckaroos knot the game at 3-3. The teams traded runs over the next two innings, before Pendleton exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to break the game open. Singles from Colson Primus, Mason Strong and Art Hill sparked the decisive rally.

Scappoose, the two-time defending 4A champion, got a big-time scare in its game with Philomath, but managed to survive and advance.

No. 3 Scappoose 7, No. 6 Philomath 6 – The two-time defending champions staked Philomath to a one-run lead, but scored in each of the first four innings to build a 7-1 lead. Riley DuBois, Will Kessi and Nolan Lennox led the offensive charge for Scappoose. Philomath rallied in the six and the seventh, scoring three in the six and two in the seventh, and were still threatening with two on and two outs, when Kessi induced a fly ball to right fielder Brandon Neilson to end the game.

In 3A, the top four seeds all survived, including top-seeded Blanchet Catholic and last year’s 3A state champion Warrenton.

No. 1 Blanchet Catholic 6, No. 8 Burns / Crane 1 -- Trailing 1-0 after 5 1/2 innings, the top-seeded Cavaliers struck for six, with Dylan Cuff driving in three and Drew Bartels plating two. That was more than enough for pitcher Carson McNally, who went the distance, striking out five.

No. 3 Warrenton 6, No. 6 North Valley 4 – Talon McGrorty threw 6.2 innings for the defending state champions and Wyatt Bond’s two-RBI single with two outs in the fifth made the difference for the Warriors. Nolan Munoz had two hits for North Valley, including a two-run homer in the fourth. Landon Allison also had two hits and went the distance on the mound for North Valley, but was hurt by six errors made behind him.

In 2A/1A, defending champion Umpqua Valley Christian, the top seed, won easily, but last year’s runner up, Knappa, had to rally to win.

No. 4 Knappa 8, No. 5 Myrtle Point / Pacific 7 – Knappa trailed 6-0 after and was still down, 7-6, in the seventh before scoring two to win in come-from-behind fashion. Gavin Barendse executed a perfect safety squeeze to score Blake Miller with the winning run. Braxton Hill earned the victory on the mound for the Loggers after coming on in the middle of the seventh inning and striking out two.

And No. 19 Portland Christian was at it again.

No. 19 Portland Christian 4, No. 6 Reedsport 1 – Joseph Diesel threw six innings of one-hit ball for the Royals, the highest seed remaining in contention in any classification. Six different players had hits for PC in what coach Kyle Wilson said was an all-around team effort at the plate in support of Diesel, who was dominant.

“Playing all year against good competition in the NWL has helped us prepare for the good teams we have faced so far this postseason,” said Royals head coach Kyle Wilson. “Good pitching and top to bottom lineups were a tough test for us all year. I don't think we're at where we are this season without playing in our league.”

The bottom line is…

Although 6A has been turned on its head, with the top four seeds all ousted; the other four classifications have seen only mild upsets. Four defending champions – all but West Linn – are alive heading into today’s semifinals. Two more wins and Thurston in 5A and Scappoose in 4A will match West Linn’s remarkable achievement of three straight state titles. Two more wins and Warrenton and UVC will be able to call themselves two-time champions.

Four top seeds – all but South Salem – also are alive. That includes undefeated Wilsonville in 5A and a Blanchet Catholic team in 3A that was undefeated until losing a double header on the last day of the regular season to 4A No. 1 Marist Catholic.

The only two double digit seeds playing in the semifinals are No. 11 Sunset in 6A and No. 19 Portland Christian in 2A/1A. Sunset actually is favored to win its road game versus McMinnville with lefty Kruz Schoolcraft on the bump. Schoolcraft is expected to be a top 10 pick in the July MLB draft.

Today’s semifinals…

6A

No. 9 Grant at No. 5 Jesuit

Jesuit is hot, having won 17 of its last 18 games. Grant has won 10 straight and is coming off the domination win over previously-undefeated South Salem.

“To advance to the state championship game we will need to pitch well and limit our opponent’s chances by playing great defense against a strong Jesuit offense,” said Grant coach Matt Kazba. “Offensively, we will need to string together a bunch of quality ABs and come up with some timely clutch hitting.”

No. 11 Sunset at No. 7 McMinnville

Sunset doesn’t have great offense 1 through 9; the Apollos win games with strong pitching.

“This is the fifth time in school history that our program has reached the semifinals in baseball,” noted McMinnville coach Todd Peterson. “We have yet to make a title game. In order to get there, we'll have to go through a great team in Sunset and one the best talents the state has ever seen in Schoolcraft. Right now our team is firing on all cylinders and playing with a ton of confidence. Furthermore, they believe in one another, which stems from having played with each other since childhood. All the kids on our team are homegrown and that is a part of what makes this run so special.

“To find success, we'll need to continue to pitch it well and play great defense, something that as a program we take a ton of pride in. Offensively we have had production up and down our lineup throughout the playoffs. It seems that each game a new guy steps up and has a big day.”

“We played a very difficult non-league schedule which I believe prepared us for the playoffs,” said Sunset coach John Barnes. “To beat McMinnville, we have to do the little things well. McMinnville is very talented and well coached. Handling the heightened atmosphere of the semis will be the key to our success.”

5A

No. 5 Summit at No. 1 Wilsonville

The first meeting between these teams may hinge on whether Wilsonville’s powerful offense can get to Summit ace Alex Via.

No. 3 Canby at No. 2 Thurston

This is also the initial meeting between these teams. Thurston lost only once – to Sunset – versus an in-state opponent. Canby made the 6A championship game in 2022.

4A

No. 5 Henley at No. 1 Marist Catholic

Henley ace Mark Carpenter went 6.2 innings on Friday. His availability today, and for how long, may determine whether the Hornets can pull off the upset over a Marist team whose three losses have come by a combined six runs.

No. 7 Pendlton / Nixyaawii at No. 3 Scappoose

Pendleton won, 10-7, during a regular-season game played on April 22. Scappoose is home for this one, however, and is big-game tested.

3A

No. 4 Taft at No. 1 Blanchet Catholic

This one should be a doozy as Blanchet won the two Special District 3 meetings by a run each. The Cavaliers have a deep team with much more offense. Taft has Zack Hankins, who hasn’t yielded an earned run all season. Like Carpenter for Henley, Hankins’ availability today, and for how long, may determine the outcome of this game.

No. 3 Warrenton at No. 2 Cascade Christian

Each team has lost just once to a 3A opponent this year. Home field may be the X-factor in the first meeting between the schools this year.

2A/1A

No. 4 Knappa at No. 1 Umpqua Valley Christian

This is a rematch of last year’s state championship game, which UVC won, 13-9. Knappa won the regular-season match this season, 2-1.

Said Knappa coach Jeff Miller: “UVC is the best team in 2A baseball. They have the returning state player of the year from 2024, play all phases well, have great coaching, and have a winning tradition. Things will have to go just right for us to be in the game. Fortunately, we have had good pitching this season and a recent history of upsetting the Monarchs (pre-season game in Astoria this year) so our players know that it can be done. If we can keep it a low scoring game - we will have a chance. Our team has been through many tightly-contested games this season, including the playoffs, so we like our chances if we are close late in the game.”

No. 19 Portland Christian at No. 2 Kennedy

After starting the season 18-0, Kennedy is just 7-3 over its past 10. PC started 4-5 but is 8-2 over its last 10, including three playoff upsets.

“We need to execute our plans at the plate, take care of the baseball on defense and make the routine play,” said Portland Christian coach Kyle Wilson on how to beat Kennedy. “Pitchers need to execute their pitches and trust their defense to have their back.”
