The 5A semifinals and 6A Columbia Cup final were Friday night.

MCMINNVILLE — Top-ranked Summit will take on No. 2 Silverton for the 5A football title after both had convincing wins Friday night in the semifinals.

Summit (12-0) rallied from a 12-7 halftime deficit to post a 28-14 win over No. 13 Churchill on a foggy night at Willamette University.

Silverton (11-1) took a 14-0 lead into the half and came away with a 35-21 victory over Mountain View at Willamette High School.

The championship game is 5 p.m. Nov. 28, at Hillsboro Stadium.

Summit, which won state titles in 2015 and 2022, got four rushing touchdowns from senior Jude Anderson, including three in the second half. He scored on runs of 19, 6, 1 and 2 yards, and finished the game with 171 yards rushing on 35 carries.

“He’s only as good as his offensive line,” Summit coach Corben Hyatt said of Anderson. “Coming into the game, he had rushed for 1,200 yards, but it’s our offensive line. I think it’s the best in the state. We have a college offensive line. We are pretty lucky with this group.”

Churchill (8-4), which had knocked off No. 4 Lebanon in the first round, and No. 5 Thurston in the quarterfinals, ran out of steam against the Storm in the second half.

“I give them all the credit in the world, they pulled the two upsets to get here,” Hyatt said of the Lancers. “The thing is, it’s hard to replicate their offense. When they came out and scored on us on their initial drive, it was kind of eye opening for our defense. We kind of made some mistakes in the first half. We only had three turnovers on the year and had two in the first half tonight”

The Lancers, who were playing in the semifinals for the first time since 2017, opened the game with a 9-yard rushing touchdown from Lukas Babbit with 7:26 left in the first quarter, but the PAT failed, giving Churchill a 6-0 lead.

Anderson scored his first touchdown early in the second for a 7-6 lead, but the Lancers would score once more before the half on a 2-yard run by Lucas Gansen for a 12-7 lead.

It was all Summit and Anderson in the second half. The Lancers got a safety with 2:51 left in the game, but it barely made a dent in the Storm’s lead.

“We just had to be us,” Hyatt said. “Our size and physicality just took over. We knew if we could make ourselves right, we would respond. We knew if we could wear their defensive line down, it would affect their offense. They have so many guys that have to play both ways.”

Andrew Guthrie completed 12 of 18 passes for 109 yards and one interception for the Storm, while Connor Conneely had four catches for 56 yards, and Cade Nitzschke had four catches for 44 yards.

Babbit led Churchill with 81 yards rushing on 19 carries, while TJ Wright had 46 yards on 15 carries. Gansen ran for 26 yards and completed 2 of 9 passes for 50 yards. He also threw three interceptions.

No. 2 Silverton 35, No. 3 Mountain View 21: The Foxes found a hole in the Cougars’ defense en route in a trip to the 5A championship game.

“We don’t really look at things in terms of running or passing for a certain amount of yards,” Silverton coach Dan Lever said. “We must want to attack their structure, and we did that tonight. It was definitely a team win. Our offensive and defensive lines paved the way for us.”

Silverton, which won the state title in 2021, is back in the title game for the first time since then.

“They all feel good,” Lever said of his team.

Mountain View, which finished second the past two years, had used a suffocating defense to reach the semifinals, outscoring opponents 55-0 over the first two rounds of the playoffs.

“Our schedule built us for the playoffs,” Lever said. “Our schedule was the toughest in the 5A. We opened with Coeur d’Alene, and beat Grants Pass. Three of the teams in our league were in the quarterfinals.”

The Foxes had a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter, but the Cougars (10-2) scored as time expired as Jackson Urbach hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Alex Toolan. Carter Van Horn made good on the PAT to pull his team within 21-14 at the half.

In the second half, the Foxes got rushing touchdowns from Levi Schurter and Ryder VanDeweghe to extend their lead to 35-14.

Mountain View scored with 5:30 left in the game as Ryder Carpenter took the ball in for 1 yard out, but that would be as close as the Cougars would get down the stretch.

Chase Dominguez threw for 175 yards and one touchdown for Silverton, and rushed for 42 yards and another score.

6A Columbia Cup final

No. 18 South Medford 14, No. 17 Sandy 7: After finishing second the past two years, the Panthers finally captured the Columbia Cup title.

“When you knock on the door enough times, sometimes it finally opens,” said South Medford coach Bill Singler, who is in his 28th year with the Panthers.

After starting the season 0-3, South Medford finished with a seven-game win streak.

“We had a rough start to the season, but once we won that first game against South Salem, we found ways to win instead of finding ways to lose,” Singler said. “Our seniors have won 25 games over the past three years. The seniors were a gritty group and showed a lot of leadership. Our playoffs wins weren’t easy. It’s hard to keep winning.”

It was a close game throughout. South Medford (8-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on touchdown throws by Makana Brown to Elijah Baines and Sammy Huxtable.

Sandy scored late in the third quarter on a 9-yard run by Caden McMahon, but that would be it for the Pioneers.

“We aren’t flashy,” Singler said. “Our quarterback is a linebacker. We don’t score a lot of points. Our defense was the cornerstone of our team. The defense gave us chances to win games.”

Brown completed 8 of 9 passes for 102 yards, while Wes Boyd led the ground game with 63 yards on 13 carries.

Sandy (7-5), which won its first playoff game in 26 years in the quarterfinals, ran for 167 yards as a team, led by Micaiah Turin with 60 yards on four carries.
