PORTLAND – Tualatin punctuated a second-half turnaround with a dramatic finish to beat AC Davis of Yakima 74-71 in a battle between reigning girls basketball state champions Sunday at Franklin High School.
With the game tied at 71-71 and three seconds left, Timberwolves sophomore point guard Love Lei Best drove the length of the floor and made a deep three-pointer at the buzzer for the win.
Tualatin, No. 1 in the OSAAtoday 6A coaches poll, improved its record to 6-0. AC Davis, the top-ranked team in Washington, fell to 6-1.
Down 38-27 at half, the Timberwolves outscored the Pirates 47-33 the rest of the way. Sophomore forward Kendall Dawkins made 12 of 18 shots and finished with 28 points and seven rebounds for Tualatin. Best added 17 points and six assists.
Junior guard Isa Garcia led AC Davis with 22 points. Junior guards Cheyenne Hull and Averie Brandt each added 16 points for the Pirates, who won their first state title last season.
Both teams won opening-round games in the POA Holiday Classic on Saturday at Franklin, but Sunday's game was scheduled separately from the tournament, which resumes Monday.
In Monday's semifinals, Tualatin will play Mater Dei (Calif.) in the Diamond bracket at 8 p.m. at Franklin. AC Davis will meet No. 4 South Medford in the Platinum bracket at 12 p.m. at Franklin.
