With just two weeks until the OSAA cheerleading championships Feb. 13 and 14, teams are taking advantage of every opportunity to practice performing and get feedback from the judges at local competitions.
On Jan. 24, cheer teams took to mat at the Scotsmen Rumble at David Douglas High School as well as the Newberg Classic at Newberg High School.
At the Scotsmen Rumble, Redmond earned first place in the JV Game Day division, and Central Catholic took second, while in the JV Traditional division, Westview earned the top spot, followed by Barlow in second, and Reynolds in third.
In the 4A Game Day division, Gladstone took home the win, while The Dalles earned second, and Seaside earned third. Although both Gladstone and The Dalles are competing in both the traditional and game day divisions at some local competitions, both will compete in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Coed Traditional division at state.
Redmond snagged first by just 0.5 points over second-place Churchill in the 5A Game Day division, followed by Centennial in third. Churchill and Corvallis will go head-to-head again in this division at state, but Redmond will compete in the 6A/5A Coed Traditional division.
In the 6A Game Day division, West Linn earned first place, Lakeridge took second by 0.5 points over Gresham, who came in third. Both West Linn and Lakeridge will compete in the 6A Large Traditional division at the OSAA cheerleading championship.
In the 6A/5A Stomp and Shake division, Jefferson placed first and Parkrose second. In the traditional divisions, Gladstone took first again, but this time in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Coed Traditional division. The Dalles followed in second place.
In the 3A/2A/1A Traditional division, Pleasant Hill competed unopposed, as did Stayton in the 4A Traditional division. Corvallis came out on top in the 5A Traditional division with Hood River Valley following in second.
In the 6A Traditional Small division, Westview stood atop the podium in first, Clackamas followed in second, and Southridge edged out Barlow by 0.2 points for third place. The Lions from West Linn earned first place in the 6A Traditional Large division while Lakeridge placed second.
The 6A/5A Coed Traditional division saw Oregon City take first, Beaverton take second, and Reynolds take third.
Over at the Newberg Classic, the stiff competition continued. Caldera beat out McMinnville for first place in the JV Game Day division, while West Albany edged out Tualatin by 0.1 points for first in the JV traditional division. Thurston followed in third place.
In the varsity game day divisions, Gladstone competed unopposed in 4A, while Central took first over Thurston in 5A. In 6A, Mountainside and Sherwood tied for first, and West Salem earned second.
The varsity traditional divisions included some close match ups that will be fun to follow in the upcoming weeks.
Santiam Christian beat Yamhill-Carlton to take first in the 1A-3A Traditional division. In the 4A Traditional division, Sweet Home came out victorious, with Newport following in second, and Estacada taking third. The 5A Traditional division concluded with Summit on top, Mountain View in second by just 0.1 point over Caldera, who placed third.
In the 6A Small Traditional division, Tualatin came in first, Sherwood second, and North Medford third. Grant took the win over Mountainside in the 6A Large Traditional division. The 5A/6A Coed Traditional division crowned McMinnville as the champion, North Salem followed in second, and Thurston rounded out the top three.
The following weekend, teams competed at the Pacer Invitational at Lakeridge High School and the Orange and Black Cheer Challenge at Roseburg High School on January 31.
In the JV divisions, Mountainside dominated by taking first in both the game day and traditional divisions. In game day, David Douglas followed in second and Central Catholic took third. In traditional, Tualatin beat out West Albany by 0.5 points to earn second, leaving West Albany in third.
In the 3A/2A/1A Game Day division, Portland Christian competed unopposed, as did Cascade in 4A Game Day division. The Colts from Thurston took the top spot in the 5A Game Day division. West Albany ended up in second, followed by Putnam in third. Both West Albany and Putnam will compete in traditional divisions at state.
In the 6A Varsity Game Day State division, David Douglas edged out Lake Oswego by 0.5 points, putting Lake Oswego in second, and Clackamas in third.
