PENDLETON -- By the end of the game Thursday, Oakland boys basketball coach Jeff Clark’s tie was halfway undone, his shirt tail was untucked and he was sweating as much as his players, who won a 59-56 hard-fought battle over Stanfield in the quarterfinals of the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 2A tournament at Pendleton High School.
“They don’t go away,” Clark said of Stanfield. “They shoot, shoot, shoot. Everyone on their team can shoot the ball.”
The Oakers (23-5) move on to the semifinals, where they will play Trinity Lutheran on Friday at the Pendleton Convention Center.
“Our goal every year is to play on Saturday,” Clark said. “I’m pleased with us coming through the fight. No lead was safe.”
Stanfield (18-8) will play East Linn Christian in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. Friday at the Convention Center.
“The plan is to play on the last day,” Stanfield coach Rylie Smith said. “I’m a little frustrated. We were playing with intensity but not getting some calls. It does make it harder. We just had to stay focused and play our game. It came down to the last second.”
The Tigers came out and took control of the game. Oakland hit the first basket but Stanfield tied the score at 2-2, then took off for leads of 7-2, 10-4 and 15-8 before the Oakers pulled within 15-12 at the end of the quarter.
Aaron Sanchez drained three 3-pointers into second quarter for the Tigers, his last giving Stanfield a 32-23 lead with 33 seconds remaining in the first half.
Andy McCurdy drove inside for a bucket with 1 second left to pull the Oakers within 31-25 at the half.
Stanfield did a good job of limiting Oakland’s 6-foot-10 Jaxon Clark to just four points in the first half.
“They doubled teamed him the whole time, but he got with it in the second half and made some shots,” Clark said.
Oakland came out in the third quarter and scored the first seven points to take a 32-31 lead — its first since 2-0.
Ryan Fullerton hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left in the quarter as the Oakers went on an 18-5 run to take a 43-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
“We missed a lot of shots in the first half,” Clark said. “I really felt good about our defense in the third quarter. Our bench came in and did a good job.”
Stanfield’s Alex Angel hit a basket to open the fourth quarter, and the Tigers got a pair of 3-pointers from Carter Sharp to pull his team within 49-45 with 3:41 to play.
Zander Wright drilled a 3 from the top of the key for Stanfield to make it 50-48, and Israel Monkus made a pair for free throws to cut the lead to 52-51.
A pair of baskets by Shepard Brooksby and McCurdy gave the Oakers a 56-51 lead. The Tigers were able to cut lead to two a couple of times down the stretch.
McCurdy made one of two free throws with 6.5 seconds remaining for a 59-56 lead, and the Tigers had the last shot, a 3 by Sanchez, but the ball went off the back of the rim to end the game.
McCurdy finished the game with 24 points and four steals, while Jaxon Clark added 12 points and nine rebounds.
“We knew he (McCurdy) liked to drive to his left, but we forgot at times he was left-handed and he went to the rim,” Smith said.
Sanchez led the Tigers with 18 points, while Monkus and Angel each had 10, and Sharp chipped in eight. Wright and Antonio Galindo each had five rebounds.
Sanchez and McCurdy were named the Moda Health Players of the Game.
No. 1 Trinity Lutheran 74, No. 8 East Linn Christian 31: The Saints were off and running from the opening tip and never looked back in handing the Eagles a loss in the quarterfinals at Pendleton High School.
Trinity Lutheran (26-1) held East Linn Christian to single digit scoring in all four quarters, including six in the third as the Saints took a 65-22 with one quarter to play.
Each team had nine points in the fourth quarter as the Saints emptied their bench.
Chimi Gilbert led Trinity Lutheran with 18 points and five steals, while Quentin Romney added 16 points and seven rebounds, Austin Imhoff had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Chance Nichols chipped in 13 points and hauled down 12 rebounds.
Gavin Wilson finished with nine points and three rebounds for the Eagles, while Grady Knurowski added five points and three rebounds.
No. 2 Portland Christian 78, No. 7 Lowell 31: After finishing second the past two years in Pendleton, the Royals want another shot at the title. They took the first step with a dominating win over the the Red Devils in the quarterfinals.
Portland Christian (28-0) will play Regis on Friday in the semifinals. Lowell (22-6), making its first trip to Pendleton since the 1960s, will slide over to the consolation bracket, where it will face Western Christian.
The Royals sprinted put to a 25-3 lead in the first quarter. They held a 23-0 lead before Henley Garner hit a 3-pointer for the Red Devils with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Then Royals’ lead hit 30 points in the second quarter, and held a 45-13 lead at the half.
Portland Christian outscored Lowell 35-18 in the second half to keep is unbeaten streak alive.
Josiah Harris-Skidmore led the Royals with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Zane Ozier added 12 points, six assists and four steals. Ethan Larner and Hudson Calhoun each had 11 points.
Carson Ewan finished with eight points and three rebounds for the Red Devils, while Gage Greco had six points and five rebounds, and Garner had five points.
No. 3 Regis 61, No. 11 Western Christian 55: In a battle of Tri-River Conference foes, the Rams held on for the win and kept the Pioneers out of the championship game for the first time in seven years.
Regis (26-2) will play Portland Christian in the semifinals, while Western Christian (15-13) will head to the consolation round for a game against Lowell.
The game was close throughout, with the Rams leading 17-14 after the first quarter, and 33-26 at the half.
Regis put together a 12-9 third quarter for a 45-35 lead, but the Pioneers never backed down. They pulled within two points, 49-47, then trailed 59-55 with seconds remaining as the Rams held on for the win.
Eli Silbernagel led the Rams with 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Fletcher Gould had 15 points and three steals, and Lucas Koehnke had 13 points and four steals.
Parker Reed (26 points) and Gage Slaughter (23 points) handled the scoring for the Pioneers, while Sammy Quesada had eight assists and three steals.
Girls quarterfinals, Pendleton Convention Center
No. 1 Regis 72, No. 9 Knappa 38: Clara Persons had a game-high 25 points as the Rams cruised into the semifinals with a victory over the Loggers.
Regis (27-1) will play Crosshill Christian in semifinals, while Knappa (16-3) moved to the consolation bracket, where it will take on Oakland.
Regis stormed out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter, and led by as many as 20 points in the second quarter before taking a 44-23 lead at the half.
The Rams extended their lead to 63-31 after three quarters to put the game out of reach for good.
Frankie Koehnke finished with 17 points for the Rams, eight of which came in the first quarter, and grabbed nine rebounds. Hadley Foster added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Alabama Rogers led the Loggers with 10 points and four rebounds, while Lucy Oien had seven points and six rebounds, and Mylie Lempea chipped in six points.
No. 5 Stanfield 43, No. 2 Weston-McEwen 37: Every time these Blue Mountain Conference foes play, it’s donnybrook.
Their quarterfinal game Thursday night was no different as the Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a victory and a spot in the semifinals.
“I’m just glad we don’t have to it again,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said of playing the TigerScots. “It’s been great this year, but let’s just keep it at 2-2.”
The Tigers (19-6) advance to play Western Christian in the semifinals. The TigerScots (23-3) will play Bandon in the consolation semifinals.
Weston-McEwen had the upper hand in the first half, leading 12-10 in the first quarter as Evie Hodgson and Charlotte Hansell hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the last 1:21 of the quarter.
The TigerScots outscored the Tigers 8-5 in the second quarter to take a 20-15 lead at the half.
Kenya Dovalina scored a pair of baskets for Stanfield to open the third quarter, and Taylor Sperr made a free throw to tie the score at 20-20. The teams traded baskets, and Kayla Monkus hit shot with 39 seconds remaining for a 28-28 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Sperr scored eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a little breathing room and the win.
Kahleigha Haney led Stanfield with 15 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Sperr added nine rebounds and four blocked shots, and Dovalina had nine points and seven rebounds.
Addy Hall finished with14 points and five steals for Weston-McEwen, while Hansell had 12 points and four rebounds, and Hodgson seven points and three rebounds.
No. 4 Crosshill Christian 51, No. 12 Oakland 28: The Eagles put together a 25-7 run in the third quarter to break open a close game and roll into the semifinals with a win over the Oakers.
Crosshill Christian (23-5) will face top-ranked Regis in the semifinals. Oakland (19-10) will play Knappa in a consolation game.
Crosshill Christian had a 9-4 had in the first quarter, and led 19-16 at the half.
In the third, Khloie Cobb scored 10 points and Kasey Zuidema had six to lead the Eagles as they took a 44-22 lead.
Oakland did not have enough firepower to rally in the fourth.
Zuidema led the Eagles with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Cobb had 15 points and four steals, and Zoey Baker added 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Sahara Kramer led the Oakers with 11 points and three runs, while Lianna Gardner had nine points, and Morgan Swearingen hauled down seven rebounds.
No. 3 Western Christian 37, No. 6 Bandon 34: This one was a barnburner from start to finish, with the Pioneers sealing the win with free throws in the final 16 seconds to advance to the semifinals.
“I’m super proud of our girls,” Western Christian coach Ben Brown said. “They had four days to prepare for us and I knew it would be this kind of a game. We battled all game long.”
Western Christian (23-5) will play Stanfield in semifinals Friday night, while the Tigers (24-4) will take on Weston-McEwen in the consolation round.
The Pioneers led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, overcoming a four-point lead by the Tigers.
Bandon held Western Christian to two points in the second quarter for a 16-15 lead at the half.
Savannah Newman scored six points in the third quarter for the Pioneers, who held a precious 27-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Caitlyn Michalek put six points on the board for the Tigers in the fourth, with her final basket pulling her team to within 35-34 with 9.5 seconds left in game. Western Christian made two free throws in the final 8.4 second to seal the win.
Kinsey Wark led the Pioneers with 12 points and five rebounds, while Newman had 10 points and three rebounds, and Clara Newman chipped in seven points and four rebounds.
Michalek finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Marlie Carmack had 10 rebounds, and Shasta Johnson seven points and three rounds.
