In this edition of Notebook, read about our Fab Frosh, a slew of impactful no-hitters and a batter making doubleheader memories to share with his grandchildren one day.
Can Chandler BE any hotter?
Ashland senior Malakai Chandler must have set some kind of record for his work in a doubleheader at Springfield on Saturday. The lefty swinging first baseman had nine hits in 10 at bats between the two games, with five doubles, a triple, two home runs and 16 RBIs!
Sixteen (16) runs driven home in two blowout wins. That’s insane!
In Game 1, Chandler had five hits, four for extra bases, and drove in nine. He followed up in Game 2 with four more extra base knocks, including two homers, and seven more RBIs. The first homer was an oppo taco to left center. The second nuke hit the top of the scoreboard in right field.
Chandler entered the weekend double dip with no homers and 13 RBIs and left as one of the state leaders in knocking guys in!
Amazing!
Winning in style
Central Linn entered Game 1 of Friday’s double header at East Linn Christian Academy 0-15 on the year. The Cobras snapped that winless streak in grand fashion, as Jacob Helms and Cameron Offutt combined on a no-hitter to defeat the Eagles (7-6) by an 8-2 score.
Helms started and pitched into the seventh inning, fanning 14. Offutt closed the game with another strike out.
ELCA won the second game, 9-3.
Colten Northern had a great day at the plate for Central Linn, with seven hits in eight trips between the two games, with two RBIs.
Undefeated
Our two unbeaten teams from last week remain so six days later. In Taft’s case, the 17-0 Tigers have not played since beating Santiam Christian, 6-4, on Tuesday, April 21.
Taft’s obstacles to an undefeated regular season include a two-game series, starting today, with Blanchet Catholic, the defending 3A state champions. The 3A Tigers also take on 2A/1A No. 1 Kennedy, currently 15-1, on May 21, in the final game before the playoffs.
Crosshill Christian is now 16-0 after edging tough Regis, 3-2, on the road yesterday in 2A/1A action. The Eagles won a fantastic pitchers duel between Carter Hinderks and Owen Eaton of Regis by pushing a run across in the top of the seventh on Tayden Isaacson’s second RBI hit of the game.
Crosshill Christian has two more at home with the state No. 6 Rams on Friday and take on No. 4 Monroe / Alsea for three the week of May 12 to close the regular season.
Tuesday in the Association…
There were three interesting results among the larger schools in what was a full slate of games across the state on Tuesday.
Lincoln dominated Grant, 9-1, in PIL play. The Cardinals’ 12-hit attack featured homers from Hunter Arana and Reed Eldridge. Arana finished 4-for-4 and Eldridge added a triple to his big fly. Senior Graeme Warner-McGee was the winning pitcher, striking out seven over five innings of work.
Both teams now have one loss in the league. Cleveland remains unbeaten in the PIL.
Lakeridge came from down 4-0 to upend West Linn, 8-6. The Pacers chipped away at West Linn’s lead with some small ball, got a solo shot in the seventh from sophomore Hudson Armerding and made the lead hold up behind reliever Cash Dickson. Lakeridge was coming off a three-game sweep of Tigard in which the Pacers outscored their TRL foe, 23-0.
Thurston upended Crater, 4-2, in eight innings, handing the Comets only their third loss of the year. With the game knotted at 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Parker Edwards delivered a triple for the Colts – his third hit of the game – and came home on a safety squeeze from Dean Knowles. A Levi Woodman sac fly after a Jackson Lane double added an insurance run for Edwards, who threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Thurston (11-8) has now won three games in a row, benefitting from the return of two players who’d been out all year due to injury.
News and notes…
Tualatin senior righthander Trenton Hertzog struck out the first nine hitters he faced Friday in a 10-1 win over Oregon City. Hertzog finished with 16 Ks over six innings pitched. Mehki Pressley sparked the Timberwolves’ offense by going 4-for-4 with three runs and three driven in.
***
Blake Patereau is heating up for Cascade Christian.
In Game 1 last Thursday of a doubleheader at Rogue River, the sophomore slugged two homers and reached base all four times. He also punched out 12 in the run-rule-shortened win.
Patereau added another dinger in Game 2 of the twin bill and finished the day with three long balls, four ribbies and a win on the mound!
***
Tillamook is 7-3 since sixth-year head coach Matt Strang resigned on April 3. The Cheesemakers put a big smile on new coach Travis Moncrief’s face recently when they tossed two no-hitters over the span of three games.
On April 18, junior lefty Brazen Brouhard did the trick in a 9-0 win over Marshfield, striking out 13 in the process.
Three days later, senior righthander Jakoby Goss fashioned a gem of his own, fanning 17 in a 4-0 win over Seaside.
Fabulous Freshmen!
Based exclusively on nominees from varsity head coaches, see below most of the Fab Frosh making a major impact across Oregon baseball diamonds this spring.
Josue Avendano, INF, Southridge – Avendano has been the leadoff hitter for the Skyhawks since opening day. He leads the team with four doubles and is second in RBIs with 11.
Seth Balderson, RHP, Cleveland – Balderson is 2-0 for the 9-6 Warriors with a 1.58 ERA over 17.2 innings pitched and has given up fewer walks and hits combined than innings pitched.
Gavin Chin, 2B, Crosshill Christian – An outstanding defender at a critical position for the undefeated Eagles, Chin is also a bottom of the order spark as the “second leadoff” batter. He is hitting .441 and has gotten on base at an almost-.600 clip.
Brayden Cooper, RHP/3B, Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian – Cooper has been an efficient mound presence for the 12-6 Cougars while hitting .354 at the dish.
Kord Dickenson, OF, Heppner / Ione – Dickenson is a full-time starter for the 11-5 Mustangs and is hitting .396 with 15 RBIs. He has also pitched and is gaining confidence daily on the mound.
Thatcher Dray, 3B/RHP, The Dalles / Dufur – Dray leads the Riverhawks in hitting at .395. He has solidified the hot corner for Pat Clark’s team and has even contributed on the hill, throwing to a 1.56 ERA over nine innings.
Jacksen Dunn, C/1B/DH, Central Catholic – A smart baseball player with big power potential, Dunn has started at three different positions for the Rams. Dunn’s best years are ahead of him. He will be sure to make an impact on offense and defense.
Bentley Edward, RF, Toledo – Edward has helped the Boomers offensively and defensively and is hitting .357 in league play.
Sean Hausman, RHP/INF, Cleveland – Hausman is getting it done in all facets for the Warriors, who are currently undefeated in the PIL. The youngster has won five games on the mound while posting an ERA just above 2.00 and he is batting .375 with eight driven in.
Urijah Johnson, OF, Bend – Johnson has some serious pop hitting at the bottom of the lineup for the very strong Lava Bears. This competitor already has five doubles, all of which have clanged off of the fence.
Korban Koontz, RHP/OF, Crosshill Christian – A relief ace for the undefeated Eagles, Koontz has helped his team preserve late-game leads several times. He has a 1.35 ERA and has been a lock down defender in the outfield when not pitching.
Jackson Lottis, INF, Portland Christian – Lottis is a tough out despite being so young. He leads the Royals in qualify at bats and has power to all fields. He also is developing a solid repertoire as a pitcher.
Kaleb Mazurowski, RHP, Portland Christian – A tall, lanky righthander, Mazurowski pounds the strike zone for the 10-7 Royals. He leads the team in innings pitched and complete games and has a 2.8 ERA. He could develop into a monster as his secondary pitches evolve.
Kellen McDonnell, 1B/OF/DH, Franklin – A left-handed stick, McDonnell has taken over the number 2 spot in the Lightning batting order. He leads the team with a .500 OBP while playing multiple positions in the field.
Cole Migaki, RHP/3B, Central Catholic – Migaki has been the everyday third baseman for the Rams when not pitching and shows advanced power for his age. On the hill, he has been a staple atop the rotation showcasing a mid-80s fastball with control and a lot of swing and miss.
Carson Noce, RHP/CF, Crater – Noce has made a massive impact on one of the elite 5A teams in the state. He is hitting .500 on the year, with 13 RBIs and 12 steals and has won four games on the mound while posting an ERA under 1.00. Noce was the Fresno Easter Classic MVP early in the season in California.
R.J. Nunez, DH/LHP, Umatilla – Nunez has shined for the Vikings, hitting .300 while starting all games but one. Assistant coach Ian Coyle says that Nunez helps turn over the bottom of the order. Nunez also has succeeded on the mound in a relief role, pitching to a 1.91 ERA over six appearances.
Landon Orth, RHP/INF, Western Christian – Orth has made a huge impact batting at the top of the lineup for the Pioneers. He leads the team in walks and is putting the ball in play at a .357 clip currently.
Coda Skinner, INF/RHP, North Eugene – Skinner has been a potent bat for the Highlanders, hitting .500 with 11 driven home. He also is finding his footing on the mound. In eight innings pitched, he has yet to yield a run.
Jordan Socha, 2B, Toledo – Socha won the second baseman job a few games into the season and has made it his own. He’s hitting .286 in league play while displaying a solid glove up the middle.
Hayden Weiss, INF/RHP, Taft – Weiss is a big reason that Taft is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in 3A. The freshman is 4-0 on the bump with a 0.32 ERA and 37 strikeouts. He also is a middle-of-the-order bat and the team’s defensive anchor at short.
Matt Wilson, C, Heppner / Ione – Ever improving, Wilson in the catcher position allows the 11-5 Mustangs to put their best defense on the field. Wilson is among the state leaders in throwing out baserunners and his .281 batting average makes him an asset in the order.
Ridge Witherspoon, RHP/UTIL, Union / Cove – A versatile defender and consistent on-base presence for the Bobcats, Witherspoon also has thrown several times in relief to a 2.40 ERA.
Bradley Woodward, INF, McMinnville – The switch hitter has batted both leadoff and ninth for the Grizzlies. He is batting .313 on the year, leads the team in runs scored and routinely puts together competitive at bats.
Stats Categories
We continue with our baseball stats categories. The goal is to have 10-15 players per category list. Stats thresholds are adjusted week-by-week for that reason.
Baseball coaches exclusively contributed to the population of these categories.
Baseball coaches who did not contribute, but wish to, may contact John Tawa at johnt@osaa.org to learn how to get their players on these lists.
