Senior Tyson Smith (Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian) is poised to break the state career K record this week
Senior Tyson Smith (Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian) is poised to break the state career K record this week

In this edition of Notebook, read about our Unsung Heroes, a strikeout king on the verge of setting an all-time record and a team that stands alone in the loss column.

Can’t spell Smith without a K

Get a whiff of this!

Tyson Smith, a senior righthander for Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian, is just 20 strikeouts away from matching the Oregon career record of 564, set by Jake Forrester of Umpqua Valley Christian 12 years ago.

After a standout junior year in which Smith finished fourth in the state with 124 Ks, Smith started this spring with 33 strikeouts over his first 11 innings of work, including a whopping 20 in a 2-0 shutout of Portland Christian. He has continued to fan batters at a prolific rate and currently has 131 this season (through Monday), 37 more than anyone else!

On his team, Smith has almost 50 more strikeouts than his next two teammates, junior Ethan Hiebenthal and freshman Brayden Cooper, combined! And they are really good, having helped the Cougars build a 14-7 record on the year.

“Tyson is dominant and gets a lot of outs himself,” said coach Matt Haring. “The other two definitely are pitch to contact kids, which definitely helps keep their pitch counts down, where Tyson has to throw a lot more pitches because he misses a lot of bats.”

Smith will be on the mound today against Western Christian and Monday versus Willamina / Sheridan on Senior Night. He could ring up quite a few strikeouts over those two games, enough perhaps to break the record!

We will be watching!

Undefeated

With just over two weeks remaining in the regular season, Taft (20-0) is the last remaining unbeaten team in Oregon after Crosshill Christian (18-1) lost to Regis on Friday, 8-5, in the second game of a doubleheader.

Taft passed its biggest late-season test last week by taking two from defending 3A champion Blanchet Catholic, 7-1 and 3-2.

What is the secret to the Tigers’ success? Simple. Pitching. Taft has yielded just 36 runs – less than two per game – all season. The Tigers have given up no more than five runs in any one game and have pitched five shutouts.

Well, they have Zack Hankins and his 0.00 ERA, you say.

That’s absolutely true. Hankins is on pace to record a second consecutive regular season without an earned run. But Taft has two other main hurlers, sophomore Lonnie West and freshman Hayden Weiss, also with microscopic ERAs. West is at 0.86 over 24.1 innings of work, while Weiss has been sterling with a 0.27 ERA through 26 innings.

It’s hard to lose if you don’t give up any runs.

One-defeated

Crosshill Christian won its first two games over Regis to keep its unbeaten hopes alive, but lost to the 14-6 Rams, 8-5, on Friday in Game 2 of their doubleheader.

Jesse Eaton, Regis’ first-year head coach, said that a “selfless team effort” was key to the win.

“Everyone contributed,” he added, “whether it’s taking a walk with patience at the plate, reaching on an error through good hustle, taking an aggressive approach and hitting people in, getting themselves into scoring position, making plays on defense, or overcoming a challenging inning. One contribution that is rarely recognized outside of our dugout: our bench is amazing. We stay positive regardless of the situation, chat up our hitters and baserunners and keep the defense focused.”

As for the nuts and bolts of the win, Regis scored the first four runs of the game, but yielded five to Crosshill Christian in the bottom of the second. Starting pitcher Jason Bohnke didn’t give up another run, Regis went ahead with two in the top of the fifth and got insurance in the seventh thanks to a two-run single from Ben Valladares-Cormier. Hunter Lulay also had a big offensive day for the Rams.

“Moving forward, this gives the team confidence knowing they can compete against good teams like Crosshill,” Eaton said.

Crosshill Christian coach Benjamin Northrup admitted that the loss stung.

“I think we were a little disappointed that we lost the perfect record,” he said. “We had a lead in the third game of the series until the 5th inning, but Regis is a great team and we know we still have things to work on if we want to get to where we want to go.”

While the loss dropped Crosshill Christian from the ranks of the unbeaten, the Eagles can take solace in knowing that they are the only once-beaten team in the OSAA. That’s because Kennedy suffered its second loss on the season on Friday, dropping a 2-0 decision to Warrenton.

The pitcher’s duel meant the game was played quickly. Aaron Neahring tossed a four-hitter for Warrenton. He stuck out just four, but kept the ball on the infield with eight pop ups and six groundouts. Brody Panuke was the hard-luck loser for Kennedy. He struck out 11 over six innings, but was done in by three hits and two runs in the third, including Ryan Palmer’s two-strike, two-run single.

Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe, in typical fashion, was effusive in his praise for the Kennedy program and head coach Kevin Moffitt.

“Kennedy is always good,” Wolfe said. “Kevin and his staff do a great job, and their community knows the game and is incredible in the support of the program. The field keeps getting better! They are always fantastic hosts. Kev and I have known each other for a long time, and getting to play a program like his is always a privilege.”

Kennedy is now 17-2 on the year. The Trojans join three other teams with just two losses, Henley (17-2), Hidden Valley (16-2) and Myrtle Point (14-2). Those three lost their games in March and April and are in the midst of significant winning streaks.

Tuesday in the Association…

Yesterday was dry across the state, making it an ideal day to play meaningful baseball. And were there ever a lot of impactful games played!

There was a classic in the high desert of southeastern Oregon, where defending 4A state champion Pendleton / Nixyaawii snapped Burns / Crane’s 12-game winning streak by edging the Hilanders, 6-5, in eight innings. Vance Nelson’s double in the eighth drove home the winning run for the Bucks. Nelson won on the mound. Kolt McQuinn added three hits and three RBIs for the victors.

Elsewhere, Barlow got by 6A No. 1 Clackamas, 3-2; West Linn edged 6A No. 2 Tualatin, 5-3; and Roseburg won a one-run decision over 6A No. 6 Willamette. Westview defeated defending 6A state champion Sunset, 7-6, in eight innings; while 6A No. 3 Jesuit won by the same score over Beaverton, handing the Beavers just their third loss on the year.

Summit, the defending 5A state champion, beat back Bend, 10-1, in a battle of top five teams.

4A No. 1 Henley extended its winning streak to nine with an 11-1, five-inning decision over 3A No. 2 Cascade Christian.

La Grande also won its ninth game in a row, sneaking past Joseph / Enterprise /Wallowa, 7-6.

It’s also nine straight for Brookings-Harbor after the Bruins’ 4-2 win over Lakeview / Paisley. A solo homer from Brody Bavaro sparked a three-run surge in the bottom of the fourth to give BH the lead for good. Tucker Delay got the win, throwing five innings of two-run ball. Brookings-Harbor escaped bases loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings to hold on against a Lakeview team with really good athletes that beat Cascade Christian on Friday.

Brookings-Harbor is now 13-6 with six games to play after starting the season 4-6.

“We are just trying to stay the course and get better every week,” said coach Keith Wallin. “We really try to drive home the idea of playing our best ball in May and the guys are working real hard. “We focus on process not results. Baseball is a high failure rate sport, and the grind is what drives consistency as a whole for the club.”

Burns scorching hot

Burns / Crane had won 12 in a row before losing by a run in extra innings yesterday to Pendleton / Nixyaawii. The game was a litmus test for the 3A school against the reigning 4A state champs. By all accounts, the Hilanders passed even though they lost.

Under new coach Cam Hueckman, Burns started out 4-4, playing a tough pre-season schedule while adjusting to new practices implemented by the coaching staff. The Hilanders’ long winning streak coincided with freshman Corban Held locking down the catching position while also hitting .373. He is one of several freshmen – there are eight on the team – making major offensive contributions.

Junior Tyson Breshears is leading the offense. He is hitting close to .480 on the year with a ton of extra base hits. Junior Cannon Kemper, a three-time state wrestling champion, also is contributing at the plate in a big way, as is leadoff hitter, Jack Wright, a senior who is hitting .400 and leading the squad in extra base hits.

Wright, who is better known for his prowess on the mound, also is dominating with his powerful left arm.  He recently passed 400 career strikeouts and has unlocked a new level, Hueckman said.

“His challenges the last two years was being the dude,” Hueckman explained. “WE have a new saying with him: “Don’t play with your food. He has done a really good job not playing with his food.”

Burns / Crane has five regular-season games remaining, staring with a doubleheader with McLoughlin / Griswold on Friday.

“We have hit our stride,” Hueckman said. “I’m excited to see how we’re playing now.”

Side note: Congrats to Hueckman and his wife on the birth of their second son this week!

News and notes…

Sandy won a big Mt. Hood Conference showdown with Central Catholic on Friday. Down 3-0 heading to the seventh inning, the Pioneers scored four runs on three hits, a walk and hit batsman to rally for the victory. Luke Hatton and Cal Green both delivered two-out, two-run hits for Sandy and Bo Wolf went all the way on the mound for the Pioneers, working out of jams in three separate innings.

“It was a great win and big for our team confidence,” said Sandy coach Matt Smallwood, whose team is now 10-9 and 7-4 in conference play.

***

Union / Cove took advantage of a bye week in its league schedule and took a trip to the west side of the state to visit educational institutions, have some fun and play some non-league games.

The Bobcats visited the University of Oregon and played Mohawk on Friday, winning 18-1. They also went to Oregon State University and Wings and Waves water park and wrapped up the trip with an 8-7 loss at Blanchet Catholic, the 2025 3A state champions.

“Great experience and memories made!” exclaimed head coach Greg Poor.

Unsung Heroes

Based exclusively on nominees from varsity head coaches, see below our list of “Únsung Heroes,” those glue players who aren’t necessarily stars and often don’t get recognition but are essential to the success of a team.

Justice Bendele, senior 3B, Umpqua Valley Christian – A great teammate who has put in the hours to make a contribution to the two-time defending 2A/1A champs, head coach Dave York said that Bendele’s defensive prowess at third helped get UVC’s season on track.

Bricen Britten, junior 1B/DH, St. Paul – One of several grinders on the 10-5 Buckaroos, Britten is the kind of player who just puts in the work. “He shows up daily with a great, even- keeled attitude and just does his work,” said coach Tim Crawford. “He works to get the other guys focused and doing their work. Bricen is a ‘yes coach’ kind of kid that loves the process.”

Jordan Farness, senior 2B, Century – The Jaguars are 13-7 this year and Farness has had his hand in a lot of the winning. He may not be hitting at the same level of his junior year, but he is seeing pitches, moving runners over, sacrificing and will assume any role if it helps his team win. Farness is a good teammate, leader of the “doing the dirt work” crew and, according to coach Keean Kondo, “is a big reason we're competitive even with the low average.”

Raymond Knepel, senior OF, Irrigon – Unmatched energy from Knepel makes him the heart and soul of the dugout for the 12-4 Knights.

Maddox Law, junior OF, Toledo – The leadoff hitter on a 12-6 team, Law is a big reason Toledo is booming this year. “He is the engine that gets everything going with his elite speed and ability to get on base,” said coach Bruce Marthaller. “We are 7-0 this season when he reaches to start a game, and we felt his absence early when he missed time due to injury. Defensively, he’s a lockdown outfielder who has saved multiple runs, including two diving catches.”

Cam Morey, senior RHP, Molalla – Morey has a 2.12 ERA and, in his last outing, tossed a no-hitter at Madras on April 30 in a 10-0 win while playing with a broken left hand.

Alex Olbeter, senior UTIL, Lincoln – Olbeter’s defensive versatility – Catcher, 3B. 2B and pitcher – and his grit at the plate make him an asset. Add great energy and effort and a 100 percent team-first approach and he epitomizes what it Is to be an unsung hero.

Avier Quintero, senior RHP/UTIL, Woodburn – Not only does Quintero’s play impact the game in every phase for the Bulldogs, he also is the “heartbeat” of the team, according to coach Bo Lane. “He brings relentless energy, holds teammates accountable, and has helped grow our program by bringing others into it,” Lane added. “He may not always get the spotlight, but he’s a big reason for everything we do well.”

Logan Scott, senior 1B, South Salem – A boys volleyball player committed to Orange Coast College, Scott is playing two sports this spring and playing both well. On the diamond, where he is less heralded, Scott is hitting .298 and the natural outfielder helped out the team by moving to first base early in his senior year and made the transition look easy.

Stats Categories

We continue with our baseball stats categories. The goal is to have 10-15 players per category list. Stats thresholds are adjusted week-by-week for that reason.

Baseball coaches exclusively contributed to the population of these categories.

Baseball coaches who did not contribute, but wish to, may contact John Tawa at johnt@osaa.org to learn how to get their players on these lists.
