We are nearing the end of the regular season, the time when conference (or league or district) championships are determined. What an exciting time to be a baseball fan!
Milestone achieved!
We shared last week that Tyson Smith, a senior righthander for Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian, was just 20 strikeouts away from matching the Oregon career record of 564, set by Jake Forrester of Umpqua Valley Christian 12 years ago.
Smith started twice since. He struck out 16 last Wednesday in a 10-0 win over Western Christian and followed up with 14 more on Monday in a 14-1 victory over Willamina / Sheridan. That’s enough for Smith to be standing alone atop the Oregon all-time career strikeout hill, with 574 and counting.
Congrats Tyson!
NONE-defeated
Well folks, it happened. The last undefeated team in the state of Oregon has fallen!
On Monday, Santiam Christian put up crooked numbers in the first and third innings and hung on to defeat Taft, 4-1. Taft’s loss came after 22 consecutive wins to start the season. The Tigers rebounded to defeat Scio, 9-1, on Wednesday.
Taft now joins Crosshill Christian as the only once-defeated teams in the state. The Eagles
improved to 21-1 on Tuesday by edging Monroe / Alsea, 10-9.
A Pioneering season
Despite two losses to Lakeridge this week, Oregon City is poised to have its first winning season in six years. Key to Pioneer success has been a pitching staff that has kept opponents under three runs per game, on average.
Before the Lakeridge games, Jackson Ashley, Connor Lemmon, Elliot Hiestand, Howie Galambos and Landon Hartman anchored a staff that had struck out 211 while only walking 76.
Ashley threw a complete game in OC’s 4-0 win over Tigard on Friday, striking out 12.
Zach Baker (.352), Hartman (.321) and Brogan Burgard (.318) lead the team in hitting.
Another Pioneering season
Western Christian won only once last year. Under first-year head coach Garrett McPherson there has been incremental growth and the Pioneers have won four times. But there was a HUGE moment last Thursday, when Western edged Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian, which is 16-8, 12-11, on Thursday. Huge nights from Noah Rice and Ben Casalegno sparked the Pioneers to victory.
“We were incredibly aggressive on the bases with stolen bases and extra bases on balls in play,” McPherson noted. “We did manage to capitalize on the few mistakes they made in the field. Country is a great team and they’re well coached. Things were bouncing our way a little more often and we took advantage.
“I’m hoping this is a huge program turn around victory for us!”
Speed Boom
Braden Marthaller, a junior at Toledo, has surpassed 100 career stolen bases. He currently sits 11 ahead of teammate Maddox Law, also a junior, who has 93. Both are top five on the school’s all-time list.
When Marthaller and Law were freshmen, they were part of a team where everyone ran crazy.
“Two years ago, we leaned heavily on stolen bases to create pressure and generate offense,” said head coach Bruce Marthaller, who was an assistant on that team. “As our league has evolved, so has our strategy. The catching has improved across the board, so we’ve incorporated more hit-and-run rather than relying on straight steals. In addition, in more lopsided games we’ve played a little more station-to-station baseball.”
“That said, aggressiveness on the bases is still part of who we are; it just looks a little different now.”
Bulldogginng
Sutherlin is 12-11 with three regular season games remaining. The Bulldogs, who were 9-15 a year ago, climbed above .500 with a recent streak of five wins over six games, which is impressive given that six freshmen play prominent roles.
“At the beginning of the year, we knew we would be young but talented,” said coach Bret Prock. “I am super proud of our young crew. Our kids battle!”
Junior Aaron Lepre has been the staff workhorse for Sutherlin (a Bulldog if you will). Lepre has a 7-2 record and a 2.62 ERA over 50 innings through Saturday. He beat Douglas, 13-3 on Friday, allowing only two earned runs in six innings of work.
On offense, two freshmen, OF Quinn Gaylor and C Braxton Gary, have been catalysts. Gaylor is hitting close to .400 and has been an on-base machine. Gary is hitting over .300 in the middle of the order with 21 RBIs.
Senior Cameron King, who leads the team with 22 RBIs and is hitting .343; and senior SS Jake Narkiewicz, who has scored 18 times as the leadoff hitter; also are critical to the team’s offense.
News and notes…
Hood River Valley lefty Landen Pratt outdueled Canby superstar Jack Brauckmiller, 2-0, on Wednesday May 6 as part of a run of 13 Eagles wins over 14 games. Perennial power Wilsonville slowed HRV’s momentum this week with 6-5 and 4-2 wins for the Wildcats, which put them in the driver’s seat for the Northwest Oregon Conference title.
Stats Categories
We continue with our baseball stats categories. The goal is to have 10-15 players per category list. Stats thresholds are adjusted week-by-week for that reason.
Baseball coaches exclusively contributed to the population of these categories.
Baseball coaches who did not contribute, but wish to, may contact John Tawa at johnt@osaa.org to learn how to get their players on these lists.
