Defending state champion Melinee Udom, a junior out of Westview, is tied for first after the first round of the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 6A girls golf state championships played at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn on Monday.

Udom was steady for most of the day, collecting two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars to finish at 1-under 71. 

Lakeridge sophomore Hannah Wendford had three birdies on the front nine before giving a couple shots back on the back nine to finish tied at 1-under 71. 

The individual race is tight overall at the top with five more golfers all within five strokes of the duo at the top.

Sunset junior Eugene Yi sits in solo third at 1-over 73. Ida B. Wells sophomore Lennon Schmidt and Cleveland senior Kate Ly are four shots back in a tie for fourth at 3-over 75. Then Clackamas junior Jessi Tantog and Lake Oswego senior Hailey Lim are tied for sixth at 4-over 76.

Jesuit has taken the team lead looking for state title No. 7. The Crusaders carded a 35-over 323 to finish round one in the lead.

Metro League foe Sunset sits in second at 47-over 335 with Mountainside in third (57-over 345) and West Linn and Cleveland tied for fourth at 63-over 351. Two-time defending state champion Lake Oswego has some work to do sitting in sixth at 66-over 354.

Jesuit’s top scorer is junior Milla Patel sitting in eighth at 5-over 77 while freshman Lola McCoy-Hansen and junior Amelia Kim aren’t far behind in a tie for 10th at 7-over 79. Senior Kelly Mattson was the final scorer at 16-over 88.

The 6A tournament resumes with the first groups teeing off at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Woodburn.

5A

After four years of former North Eugene star Francesca Tomp winning the 5A girls golf individual title, a new champion will be crowned at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn this weekend.

After the first round, Wilsonville junior Annika Crothers leads the way after shooting a 5-over 77 on Monday in her first time at state. 

Joining Crothers in the final trio on Tuesday is Summit sophomore Sophi Hasselblad, who shot a 7-over 79, and Bend freshman Taylor Struble who is at 9-over 81 after the first round. Hasselblad took eighth last year at state as a freshman.

Redmond senior Payton Richardson (11-over 83), Wilsonville senior Layla Sidhu (12-over 84), Summit freshman Addison Lair (14-over 86) and Crater junior Halle Shore (15-over 87) all could be in the mix as well for the individual title.

Summit leads in the team race with a 91-over 379 while two-time defending state champion Wilsonville is sitting 16 shots back at 107-over 395 in second. La Salle Prep is in third at 111-over 399 and Crater is in fourth at 114-over 402 looking to make a move on Tuesday. 

The Storm have the most girls golf state titles in state history with 11 and they are the frontrunners to win title No. 12 heading into Tuesday.

Summit’s two other scorers include senior Makenna Kemp at 24-over 96 and sophomore Magnolia Smith at 46-over 118.

Round two of the 5A state tournament begins with groups teeing off at 8 a.m. Tuesday in Woodburn.

4A/3A/2A/1A

Two-time defending champion Salem Academy is in the driver’s seat to make it three consecutive titles after the first round of the 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament Monday at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond.

The Crusaders are led by the top two individuals, starting with junior Ellie Gladlow in first at even-par 72. Gladlow had four birdies on the day, including three on the front nine.

In second is Gladlow’s teammate in junior Chloe Johnston after she shot a 3-over 75. Johnston took second at state last year and Gladlow finished in third.

The reigning state champion in Catlin Gabel senior Vishaka Priyan is tied for third at 5-over 77. St. Mary’s Medford junior Emma Wheelock is tied with Priyan.

Salem Academy as a team is sitting at 35-over 323 to lead the field. Henley is 28 shots back in second at 63-over 351 with St. Mary’s Medford (80-over 368) and Catlin Gabel (101-over 389) rounding out the top four. The Hornets are led by freshman Kendall Mockridge at 8-over 80, which is fifth individually. 

The Crusaders other two scorers included senior Alex Willcoxen at 12-over 84 and junior Sloane James at 20-over 92.
