It’s late in the season and this report is late in the week due to Jordy Tawa’s graduation celebration from University of Rochester. Jet lag is real, folks.

Holy Toledo!

Myrtle Point was undefeated in 2A/1A Special District 4 when it faced off with one-loss Toledo last Thursday with a championship on the line.

The game featured two of the top arms in the classification. Jake Sproul struck out 12 for Myrtle Point. Braden Marthaller countered with 14 for Toledo.

The game was close the entire way. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Brandon McKibben a bases loaded double to give the Boomers the 5-4 walk-off win and their first league title in 2021.

That’s gotta be some kind of record…

Justice Bendele, a senior third baseman; and Caleb Saylor, a junior outfielder; came to the plate 10 times combined in Umpqua Valley Christian’s 19-3 win over Oakland on May 11 and they reached base all 10 times.

But neither had a hit. Bendele walked all five times he was up. Saylor was hit by pitch all five times he was up!

Just when you think you’ve heard it all…

Celebrate good times…

Last Tuesday, May 12, before Ida B. Wells  defeated Franklin, 12-2, there was a ceremony to honor the 2006 large-class state championship team from Wilson, which was later renamed Ida B. Wells.

Legendary coach Mike Clopton was present, as were assistant coach Mike Wantland and players Tim Kasal, Ryan Hoarfrost, Chris Vitellaro, Peter Stull, Luke Eilers, Aaron Pemberton, Augie Rittenberg and Johnny Verschueren.

The event held special significance for the two current varsity head coaches in the game that followed. Ida B. Wells coach Jeremy Shetler and Franklin coach Andy Berger coached the freshman team at Wilson together in 2003. Fourteen from that 2003 freshman squad went on to be a part of the championship team.

Un-Sullied?

St. Paul senior Sullivan Grott had quite the three-game series last week against Western Christian when the Buckaroos needed to sweep for playoff seeding purposes.

Grott, nicknamed “Sully,” pitched five innings on the mound, yielding just one hit while fanning 10. He played 14 innings at shortstop and was nearly flawless. And he was 9-for-12 with a homer, four RBIs and seven runs scored.

Needless to say, St. Paul won them all and is now 14-7 on the year.

The Wright stuff….

Jack Wright, a senior lefthander for Burns / Crane has 474 career strikeouts. That puts him in the top five all-time in the state of Oregon.

Two other current players also reside in the top five: Tyson Smith of Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian, the state’s career leader; and Taft senior left Zack Hankins, who is third all-time at 492.

One-defeated

Taft (24-1) is the only one-loss team in the state with one regular-season game remaining

today at tough Kennedy (24-2), which is riding a seven-game winning streak.

In Taft’s most recent outing on Friday, a 3-0 win over Scio, senior southpaw Zack Hankins threw a no-hitter, striking out 17. Hankins now has three complete-game no-hitters on the season, tying him for fifth-place all-time in Oregon history. He also is on the verge of allowing zero earned runs during the regular season for the second straight year.

Fly like an Eagle

Crosshill Christian fell from the ranks of the once defeated by losing a 5-4 decision to Monroe / Alsea on Friday, 5-4, in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Eagles came back to win the second game, 5-3, thanks to heroics from sophomore Johan Phillips, who smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief.

The win gave Crosshill Christian (22-2; 19-2) the Special District 3 title over the likes of Monroe / Alsea and Regis, the first regular season baseball championship for the Eagles just four years into the program.

News and notes…

Senior righthander Michael Buschelman tossed a six-inning perfect game for North Eugene against Springfield on May 15. He struck out 12 of the 18 batters he faced in the 10-0 win over the winless Millers…

***

Pendleton / Nixyaawii has two combined no-hitters this year. The second came Friday versus Baker / Powder Valley. The first was April 7 versus The Dalles / Dufur. In each game, Reid Furstenberg was the starting pitcher and went four innings.

***

Tualatin junior righthander Parker McCormack made his first TRL start and just his second start of the season on May 12 against Lake Oswego. The result was an 85-pitch no-hitter over the Lakers in a 6-0 win.

***

Umatilla hurler Carter Griggs has 93 strikeouts on the season. The senior righty is within 11 of setting the school’s single-season mark.

***

Gladstone got back-to-back complete game wins from sophomore Nolan Marcoe and junior Eli Mecklem Friday and Monday. Marcoe walked no one and scattered five hits in an 8-1 win over Estacada. Mecklem yielded only two hits in Monday’s 2-1 win over The Dalles / Dufur. Senior Sully Marcoe scored the winning run in that one, driven home by his brother, Nolan.

***

McMinnville junior Karson Vining has an unforgettable week to help the Grizzlies win the season series with Sherwood. He saved Wednesday’s 4-3 win, then, two days later, threw a complete-game two-hitter in a 1-0 win.

***

Corvallis senior righthander Andrew Street faced just one batter over the minimum in a five-inning no-hitter on Friday versus West Albany. The 12-0 win improved Street’s record on the season to 8-0.

Stats Categories

We continue with our baseball stats categories. The goal is to have 10-15 players per category list. Stats thresholds are adjusted week-by-week for that reason.

Baseball coaches exclusively contributed to the population of these categories.

Baseball coaches who did not contribute, but wish to, may contact John Tawa at johnt@osaa.org to learn how to get their players on these lists.
