OSAAtoday looks at Monday’s first-round 6A, 3A and 2A/1A playoff baseball games in the OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championships. We will update this story as more results roll in.

6A

No. 1 Clackamas 10, No. 32 McNary 0 (5 innings) – Jaxon Wetzler pitched well and the Cavaliers, who had 13 hits in the game, plated seven in the fourth to seal the win.

No. 16 Lakeridge 6, No. 17 Century 1 – Lakeridge broke open a close game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win at home. Wyatt Rose’s home run was the big blow. Century played competitively against the TRL power and had a chance to win, but was doomed by too many hard-hit balls right at Pacer defenders. Jonny King pitched into the seventh to earn the win for Lakeridge.

No. 9 Lake Oswego 4, No. 24 Cleveland 2 – Merik Adler pitched into the seventh for the Lakers, who ran wild on Cleveland, stealing eight bases for the game. Ryan Warhank had two hits and an RBI to spark the LO offense.

No. 8 Sheldon 9, No. 25 Mountainside 1 – Cam Thomas pitched a complete game for the Irish and Andrew Roadman was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and five RBIs.

No. 5 Willamette 10, No. 28 Ida B. Wells 5 – Brodie Butler and Brady Barry homered back-to-back in the home half of the first for the Wolverines, who led 3-1 after one and 10-3 after four to support junior RHP Mason Christian yielded just one earned run over four innings with eight strikeouts to get the win. Sophomore Zeke Thomas struck out the side in the seventh to close out the win. Grae Wilson had a homer and two doubles in the loss for Wells.

No. 21 Roseburg 5, No. 12 Barlow 3 – Roseburg scored twice in the seventh to build a 5-2 lead then held off the Bruins in a game played in rain-soaked conditions most of the way.

No. 13 Sherwood 6, No. 20 Sprague 3 -- Landon Brown went five on the mound for the Bowmen and Davis Moore and Lincoln Umlandt combined to drive in four in the great team win.

No. 4 Jesuit 5, No. 20 Nelson 0 – Chase Kelly and Nico Fernandez combined to pitch the shutout for the Crusaders, who broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning thanks to a Jake Rolling single. Kelly went six, yielding just one hit and fanning seven, for the win. Rolling finished with two hits and three RBIs.

No. 3 West Linn 9, No. 30 Westview 2 – West Linn scored eight runs in the first two innings, including a Tyler Holmes grand slam in the second, which was more than enough for winning pitched Jack Frishman, who was sharp for the Lions and got the win.

No. 19 McMinnville 3, No. 14 Beaverton 2 – Tyler Brummitt tossed a complete game five-hitter and got clutch defensive help in the seventh by 2B AJ Morrison, whose full extension dive and throw to first with two outs ended the game and prevented the Beavers from plating the tying and winning runs. Aaron Rolfe, Grant Yochum and Drew Bizon drove home the runs for the victorious Grizzlies.

No. 22 Central Catholic 12, No. 11 Sunset 2 (5 innings) – Luke Lucas and Blake Anzellotti each drove home three and Spencer Ames, Jake Pachmayr and Sam Smith each had three hits in the Rams’ 15-hit attack, to oust the defending-champion Apollos.

No. 6 Grant 8, No. 27 Forest Grove 1 – Elliot Raiton’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the first sparked the Generals to the win. Jinki Tomita struck out 10 in a route-going performance. He now has more than 200 career strikeouts.

No. 26 North Medford 7, No. 7 South Salem 5 -- After South Salem rallied from behind to tie the game in the sixth, North Medford plated two in the top of the seventh and held on to pull the upset.

No. 10 Newberg 4, No. 23 South Medford 1 -- Strong defense behind hurlers Judah Campos and Landry Jensen keyed Newberg's win. Carter Hawes had a big hit to spark the Tiger offense.

No. 15 Lincoln 3, No. 18 Oregon City 1 – The Cardinals got by the Pioneers to record their first playoff win since 2017.

No. 2 Tualatin 4, No. 31 Sandy 1 – Trenton Hertzog went 2-for-4 with a three-run dinger and four RBIs and he also teamed with Parker McCormack to toss a four hitter for the victorious Timberwolves.


3A

No. 16 Santiam Christian 9, No. 17 Douglas 2 – Chase Lewer had three hits and three RBIs and the Eagles scored in virtually every inning in the impressive win.

No. 13 Joseph / Enterprise / Wallowa 15, No. 20 Banks 5 (5 innings) – Caleb Taggart and Caleb Beachy each hit three-run homers for the Eagles. Taggart, Beachy and Kooper Grover combined to go 8-for-12 at the plate and Grover tossed five innings, striking out eight, for the win.

No. 14 McLoughlin / Griswold 5, No. 19 Elmira 4 – McLoughlin trailed 3-0 late in the game before rallying. Adrian Camarena had two hits, including an RBI double that started the comeback; and he threw six innings for the victors. 

No. 15 La Pine 7, No. 18 Sutherlin 5 – Bryson Adams drove in two big runs for the Hawks, who had to hold off Sutherlin to secure the win.


2A/1A

No. 16 Lowell 2, No. 17 Nestucca 1 – Tied at 1-1 after six, the Devils walked it off in the seventh thanks to a steal of home from Carter Harris, his third steal of the inning!

No. 12 Toledo 11, No. 21 Sherman 1 – Toledo won the game, played in rainy conditions, breaking it open in the third behind a two-run double from Bentley Edwards. Riley Tyler opened the game with three scoreless frames for the Boomers.

No. 13 St. Paul 7, No. 20 Irrigon 2 -- Peyton Alloway went six strong innings on the mound and drove home the game’s first run to help St. Paul prevail in a game hampered by a steady rain from the fourth inning on. Wyatt Smith had two RBIs for the victors and Bricen Britten and Brennan Boyd had multiple hits and stolen bases.

No. 14 Illinois Valley 7, No. 19 Santiam 5 – Down 3-0 after two, the Cougars scored seven in the middle innings, using clutch hitting to take control; then played clean defense to hold onto the lead and win.

No. 11 Heppner / Ione 7, No. 22 Crosspoint Christian 4 -- The Mustangs led 2-0 midway through then surrendered four in the fifth, only to score four of their own in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead for good. Caylin Proudfoot had two hits and four RBIs for the IV offense. Keaton Coiner added two hits and threw four innings of shutout ball, fanning seven.

No. 18 Oakridge 9, No. 15 Portland Christian 8 – Portland Christian, playoff darlings a year ago, led Oakridge 8-7 after five, only to see the Warriors plate two in the sixth. Mason Hogue was superb in relief for Oakridge and also contributed two hits and two RBIs.
