OSAAtoday looks at Wednesday’s second-round 6A, 3A and 2A/1A playoff baseball games in the OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championships. We will update this story as more results roll in.


6A

No. 1 Clackamas 6, No. 16 Lakeridge 3 – Jaden Tragesser’s two-run homer put Lakeridge on top early, but Clackamas rallied with one in the fifth and five in the sixth to win. Cade King and Nolan Foglio proved an effective duo on the mound for the top-seeded Cavaliers, striking out 13 Pacers. Kyle Kristensen had the key hit in the sixth to knot the game with two outs. The floodgates opened after that. Kristensen finished with two hits and two RBIs. Jonah Lam and Luke Brady each added two hits and an RBI for the victors.

No. 8 Sheldon 11, No. 9 Lake Oswego 3 – A 16-hit attack helped the Irish overpower the Lakers. Jaxon Detzler led the onslaught with a 4-for-4 game, including two doubles. Andrew Roadman had two hits and also went the distance on the mound, scattering eight hits.

No. 5 Willamette 8, No. 21 Roseburg 7 – Willamette and Roseburg played a thriller in Eugene, a game in which the lead changed hands five times before the Wolverines prevailed. Senior CF Brodie Butler had two hits and six putouts for the victors. Mason Christian hit a home run to open the scoring for Willamette. Track sprinter Hunter Vaugh scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

No. 4 Jesuit 10, No. 13 Sherwood 7 – Julian Vina had a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth to lead Jesuit’s come-from-behind win. The Crusaders trailed 7-2 before erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Goodwin had three hits in the game for Jesuit, which got nine free passes from Sherwood hurlers. Asher Bates was the winner in relief, with two scoreless innings, fanning four.

No. 3 West Linn 4, No. 19 McMinnville 3 – A two-out, three-run homer from Tyler Holmes, his second of the playoffs, helped the Lions overcome a 2-1 deficit in the tight win. Senior Caden Klouda was clutch in relief to help the home team hold on for the win.

No. 6 Grant 9, No. 22 Central Catholic 8 – Grant walked off with the win with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Both runs scored with two outs. Joaquin Goodlow’s full-count walk with the bases jacked brought home the tying run. Callum Broadfoot was then hit by pitch to drive home the game winner. Calvin Sorensen and Luke Caron each drove in two for the victorious Generals.

No. 10 Newberg 8, No. 26 North Medford 4 – Zadek Bowlby pitched into the seventh, Landry Jensen got the save and had a great day at the plate and Newberg’s defense was a shining star in the Tigers’ 8-4 win.

No. 2 Tualatin 8. No. 15 Lincoln 1 – Trenton Hertzog struck out 10 over 5.2 innings to win his second straight playoff game. He helped his own cause with two hits, including an inside-the-park homer. Calen Simonelic also had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one for the Timberwolves.

3A

No. 1 Taft 6, No. 16 Santiam Christian 1 – Sophomore Lonnie West tossed six innings of four-hit ball with 12 Ks. Hayden Weiss was clutch at the plate with two RBIs for the top-seeded Tigers.

No. 8 Sisters 4, No. 9 Brookings-Harbor 2 -- The Outlaws led 4-2 after three innings and the teams played scoreless ball after that.

No. 5 Warrenton 2, No. 12 Lakeview / Paisley 1 – Ryan Palmer had three hits, including an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that helped the Warriors walk off with the win. RJ Thornton finished 2-for-2 for Warrenton and also had a bases-loaded walk that plated the Warriors first run. Aaron Neahring ad a strong start for Warrenton, pitching into the seventh and allowing just one unearned run.

No. 4 Vale 16, No. 13 Joseph / Enterprise / Wallowa 6 (5 innings) – The Vikings scored 12 or more runs for the seventh straight game in the five-inning win. Vale has not lost a game since April 3. Rocco Shaffer hit his first home run, a three-run shot, for the winning team.

No. 3 Creswell 7, No. 14 McLoughlin / Griswold 2 – Creswell spotted McLoughlin / Griswold two runs in the top of the first, then produced seven unanswered for the win. The Bulldogs played error-free behind winning pitcher Landon Vaughn, who scattered five hits over six innings.

No. 6 Burns / Crane 4, No. 11 Blanchet Catholic 2 -- Senior southpaw Jack Wright twirled a complete game, striking out 12, to eliminate the defending 3A champs. Wright helped his own cause with two hits, including an RBI triple.

No. 7 South Umpqua / Days Creek 9, No. 10 Horizon Christian, Tualatin 3 – Six Lancer runs in the bottom of the second inning helped South Umpqua / Days Creek overcome a 3-0 deficit in the win. Logan Schwerdt was stellar in relief for the Lancers. Adam Whetzel and Camden Black paced the offense with two hits each.

No. 2 Cascade Christian 14, No. 15 La Pine 0 (5 innings) – The bottom of the order fueled the Challengers’ dominating win. They were on base throughout and gave the top of the order multiple opportunities to plate baserunner. Tucker Mayben had the best day at the plate, collecting three hits in as many trips with three RBIs. Blake Patereau and Grady Sickler combined for the shutout.


2A/1A

No. 1 Kennedy 11, No. 16 Lowell 1 -- Gio Vaquera and Jake Beyer combined on a one-hitter to lead Kennedy. Henry Beyer and Jayce Hansen sparked the Trojan offense with seven hits between them.

No. 8 Grant Union / Prairie City / Monument / Dayville 2, Regis 1 -- Baryn Huerta struck out 10 in a route-going performance to propel the Prospectors to the quarterfinals. Fletcher Grove knocked in the first run and heads up baserunning by Jerrett Waddel resulted in what proved to be the game-winning run.

No. 5 Myrtle Point 9, No. 12 Toledo 1 -- Jake Sproul struck out the side in each of the first three innings and his offense gave him early support in the impressive win.

No. 10 Monroe / Alsea 10, No. 13 St. Paul 0 (6 innings) -- The Dragons scored five in the fifth, then got a two-RBI double from Jose Flores in the sixth to make the margin 10 in the shortened game. Flores and Aidan Strand had two hits and two RBIs for the victors.

No. 3 Umpqua Valley Christian 9, No. 14 Illinois Valley 1 – Six runs in the bottom of the third helped UVC ease by Illinois Valley. Ryan Shaver, Max Chrisenbery and Cade Downie combined for six hits and four RBIs in the win.

No. 11 Heppner / Ione 4, No. 6 Clatskanie 3 -- Caylan Proudfoot threw a complete game for the Mustangs, allowing just one walk over seven innings. Andrew Lindsey sparked the offense with two hits in three trips.

No. 7 Lost River, No. 10 County Christian / North Clackamas Christian – Rescheduled to Thursday

No. 2 Crosshill Christian 17, No. 18 Oakridge 0 (5 innings) -- The Eagles scored 14 runs in the bottom of the second inning -- all with two outs! -- to put this game away early.
