With almost a brand new team after 10 seniors graduated a year ago, the Taft Tigers forged the best record in the state!
With almost a brand new team after 10 seniors graduated a year ago, the Taft Tigers forged the best record in the state!

The playoffs are underway! Ninety-six (96) teams started on Monday and only 40 remain. How did what and how, to end the regular season and into the playoffs…it’s all in this week’s edition of the Notebook.

On the top step

Only five teams can be state champions, but many more can call themselves “Conference champions” (or “League champions” or “District champions”). That number is 35, counting ties, for the 30 such conferences, leagues and districts there were this year.

Congrats to those who reached the top step this year!

Notes: Not only did Stayton win league, the Eagles enjoyed a winning record for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2021 season.

Clatskanie won the Northwest League title for the second straight year. Nine seniors will graduate on a team that compiled a 70-28 record during their tenure and reached the state playoffs all four years.

Toledo’s league championship was historic because it marked only the second such feat in program history and first since 2021. The Boomers are a very young team, with no seniors on the roster, and should make a deep run in the 2027 state playoffs after bowing out in the second round this year.

Warrenton’s title was its third in a row and seventh since 2018. The Warriors needed to win their last game versus Banks to clinch the District title and did so by a 9-6 score. A loss would have dropped Lennie Wolfe’s team to third in Special District 1 behind Banks and Horizon Christian (Tualatin).

Not only did Crosshill Christian win its first regular-season league championship, a first in the program’s four-year history, the Eagles followed up by winning the league playoff over Monroe / Alsea, 9-8, on Thursday.

North Eugene’s Midwestern League title marked the first time in eight years that the champion was someone other than Thurston.

One-defeated

Taft (25-1) upended Kennedy, 2-0, last Thursday to seal the state’s best regular season record and the best regular-season record in program history. Zack Hankins tossed the shutout at the three-loss Trojans, the top-seeded team in 2A/1A, to finish the regular season with a 0.00 ERA for the second straight year!

Taft’s incredible regular season is a bit surprising because the Tigers graduated 10 seniors last year and returned just one starter from last year.

Crosshill Christian was 23-2 in 2A/1A and the team with the second-best record in the state.

Here were the state’s best teams, by record and classification, over the regular season:

6AClackamas (23-3)

5ACorvallis (22-4)

4AHenley (23-3)

3ATaft 25-1

2A/1ACrosshill Christian 23-2

Joining the playoff party

How many teams made the state playoffs in 2026 after missing last year? That number is 17!

6ACleveland, McNary, Mountainside, Oregon City

5ACentral, Crescent Valley / Kings Valley Charter, Eagle Point

4AAstoria, Estacada, Phoenix

3ADouglas, Elmira, Sutherlin

2A/1ACrosshill Christian, Nestucca, Sherman, Toledo

Of those 17, four have reach the quarterfinals in their respective classifications: Central, Estacada, Phoenix and Crosshill Christian.

McNary made the playoffs in 6A after going 3-23 the year before!

Playoffs!

Two rounds of playoffs have been completed (except for Lost River v. County Christian / North Clackamas Christian this morning) and we have reached the quarterfinals in each classification.

Already, two defending state champions, Sunset in 6A and Blanchet Catholic in 3A, have been dethroned. Summit in 5A, Pendleton / Nixyaawii in 4A and Umpqua Valley Christian in 2A/1A are still alive. Summit is a 4-seed, Pendleton is 8 (was seeded seventh last year) and UVC is a 3-seed.

Monday’s playoff recaps in 6A, 3A and 2A/1A can be found here: https://www.osaa.org/today/article/4984/view?title=2026+baseball+playoff+recaps%3A+May+25

Notes included Central Catholic’s mercy-rule win over Sunset, Lincoln’s first playoff win since 2017, North Medford’s shocking win over South Salem and Oakridge’s ouster of Portland Christian, which was a surprise semifinalist a year ago.

Tuesday’s playoff recaps in 5A and 4A can be found here: https://www.osaa.org/today/article/4988/view?title=2026+baseball+playoff+recaps%3A+May+26

Notes included Estacada’s nail-biting win over Junction City, a perfect game tossed in Summit’s win, Stayton’s massive rally to beat La Grande and the playoff ouster of Wilsonville by Central. Wilsonville had an undefeated regular season in 2025.

Wednesday’s playoff recaps in 6A, 3A and 2A/1A can be found here: https://www.osaa.org/today/article/4991/view?title=2026+baseball+playoff+recaps%3A+May+27

Notes include Central Catholic coming up just short of knocking off the 2025 6A finalists in successive rounds and a 14-run inning from 2A/1A No. 2 Crosshill Christian.

News and notes…

Greg Poor has stepped down at Union / Cove. Poor was the head baseball coach for the Bobcats for 15 years before leaving in 2013. He took the helm of the baseball program again in 2023.

***

Lake Oswego junior DH Kell VanDehey hit for the cycle in a 10-0 win over Oregon City on April 28. It is the only known cycle in Oregon this year and the first cycle in the 28-year coaching career of Laker boss man Jake Anders.

What’s more: the cycle was accomplished in reverse, with the homer first, followed by the triple, double and single.

Query what you would do if you hit a gapper when you needed only a single to get your cycle!

***

Valley Catholic junior Brandon Yee threw a five-inning no-hitter on May 19 versus Harrisburg. Yee threw a five-inning perfect game back in March.

Stats Categories

We will continue with our baseball stats categories through the playoffs. The goal is to have 10-15 players per category list. Stats thresholds are adjusted week-by-week for that reason.

Baseball coaches exclusively contributed to the population of these categories.

Baseball coaches who did not contribute, but wish to, may contact John Tawa at johnt@osaa.org to learn how to get their players on these lists.
