Hank Curdy (3) and Tyler Holmes celebrate a fourth state title over five years for the West Linn Lions (JR Olson)

The 2026 baseball season is in the books and what a season it was!

Two teams that didn’t even make the playoffs last year reached state championship finals on Saturday, with one taking home the blue trophy!

Three teams, which did not win state last year, won on Saturday to win at least their second state title in the post-COVID era.

One team, which lost in the state championship game the previous two years, broke through to win it all on Saturday, its first in program history.

A team won State on Saturday by throwing a dominating no-hitter!

A team won State on Saturday by defeating a team whose starter had not given up an earned run all season!

It was that kind of season. Thanks to all for making it most memorable.

State championship stories

In the 6A final at Roto-Rooter Park in Keizer, West Linn scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning, on four hits and two walks; to pull away from Clackamas, 6-2, for its fourth state title in five years.

All-State teams

Look for baseball All-State teams to be released next week under Austin White’s byline.

For all the players who lost in state championship games on Saturday…

My eldest son, Tim Tawa, was a sophomore when West Linn made the state championship game against Sheldon in 2015. The score was tied, 1-1, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and runners on first and second when Justin Herbert hit a slow roller out towards short, where Tim was playing. He got to the ball in plenty of time but didn’t grip the ball well, panicked and rushed his throw to first. It sailed all the way to the fence while the winning run scored.

Two years later, West Linn made the championship game once more, this time against Clackamas. Tim started the game on the mound, looking for redemption from his mistake as a sophomore and revenge against a Cavalier team that had beaten him, 4-0, earlier in the season.

West Linn lost, 5-1.

It’s baseball.

Things happen, no matter how badly you wish for a different result.

Tim was dejected after the game, but still ran over to the Clackamas side to congratulate coach John Arntson and the team on their victory.

His ability to set aside his personal disappointment to recognize the achievement of his opponent is a “proud dad” moment that will stick with me forever.

Tim also understood the old saying that the journey was more important than the destination. Winning a state championship would have been a bonus, but losing did not negate all of the good work he and his team did in getting to The Show.

That’s what I hope you all will take away from the weekend. The headline days, months and years from now shouldn’t be that you lost in the state final, but that you won your way into the state championship game. How cool is that?!!!

That reasoning extends beyond the two finals competitors as well, to any player, any coach, any team that participated in OSAA baseball in 2026. You played, you competed and, on occasion, you won. Most importantly, you showed up and did a hard thing. Give yourself a hand. I know I will.

See you next year…
