Highlights from Week 2 football games around the state on Thursday-Saturday:
6A
No. 1 Lake Oswego grabbed a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and forced a running clock to start the fourth in a dominant 42-6 win over No. 4 Central Catholic. Cole Callahan had 142 yards rushing and two TDs to lead the Lakers on offense, meanwhile Jasiah Agnimel had 62 yards receiving and a 23-yard interception-return TD.
No. 3 Tualatin scored six touchdowns between the second and third quarter to run away with a 63-18 win over Glencoe. Iden Rule finished with four rushing TDs on eight carries with 34 yards while QB Lincoln Keeney had 222 passing yards and one score. Rocco Grady and Zane Carley each had two sacks on defense.
Braylon Gaines hit Lucas Gardner for the first score of the game and it was off to the races for No. 6 Nelson in a 49-7 win over No. 9 Oregon City. The Pioneers tied it at seven, but the Hawks scored the next 42, which included a rush TD from Kevin Cohen and a Wyatt Blevins catch and run to spark the rally.
A fourth-quarter rally for West Salem wasn’t enough as No. 7 Mountainside hung on for a 39-27 win. Reece Ballew ran for 238 yards and three TDs to lead the Mavericks, who led 33-14 going into the fourth. The Titans scored twice to pull within 33-27, but Ballew’s third score put the game on ice. Mountainside QB Mason Severson also tossed three TDs, two of them to Isaac Conner.
Willamette got into the win column with a 37-28 win over No. 8 Sherwood. QB Zeke Thomas threw for 184 yards and three TDs, two of them to Kawai Chamberlin who had 72 yards receiving. Amir Harris had six tackles on defense, including a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, one of which went for six.
No. 10 Lakeridge scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 21 seconds left to outlast visiting Lincoln 43-42. Carson Pickens hit Jagger Salazer for the TD, then Colby Owen ran in the two-point conversion after scoring twice on the ground already in the game.
Franklin trailed at halftime, but didn’t allow any more points in the second half to survive 22-19 over Jefferson, PDX. Finnegan McTaggart had two rushing TDs for the Lightning while Levi Rountree ran back the game’s opening kickoff for Franklin’s other score.
Cleveland scored 14 points in the second half and held McDaniel scoreless to win 14-7 and start the year 2-0. Steven Rogosin started the scoring for the Warriors with a rushing TD and then Jude Buck hit Trek Gibler for their other score on a passing TD.
Grant welcomed in the first-ever lights at the Grant Bowl with a runaway 70-0 win over Benson. Conor Segel had two pick-sixes, two of the four the Generals had overall as a team.
Ida B. Wells led 30-0 after the first quarter and rolled to a 53-12 win over reigning PIL champion Roosevelt. Ethan Hoover scored twice on the ground while Guardians senior Wyatt Hanifin recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD on the Roughriders first offensive snap of the game.
North Medford took out 5A No. 3 Wilsonville by pulling away in the fourth quarter with two scores, ultimately winning 35-14. Black Tornado QB Quinn Scott threw for 238 yards and all five North Medford touchdowns, three of them going to Z Tuivanu. Brady Patterson caught the other two and had the most receiving yards with 107. Liam Rea led the defense with two interceptions.
South Salem aired it out in a 63-8 win over Southridge. QB Kellen Bowman continued his early tear with 470 yards passing and six touchdowns, most of that going to Ben Greer with 196 yards and two scores, and Sam Johnson with 172 yards and two TDs.
Tigard rolled again in week two with a 42-0 win over Sunset. QB Aris Dimick had 171 passing yards and three TDs while also rushing for 67 more yards. Caleb Watson caught two of those touchdowns, meanwhile Taison Cepeda scored twice on the ground.
Ryker Rohaley went off to help Sheldon down 5A No. 4 Summit in a 21-14 Irish win. The QB threw for 346 yards and three TDs, one each to Barry Myles, Cameron Thomas and Max Hubbard. Myles had 145 receiving yards on 11 catches while Thomas had two interceptions on defense.
Jesuit picked up head coach Phil Rombach’s first win as head coach of the Crusaders with a 31-21 victory over Sprague. Jesuit trailed 14-0 after the first but came roaring back behind Luke Ortner rushing for 140 yards and a TD, as well as QB Jack Wilson throwing for 287 yards with two TDs and one rushing score.
David Douglas scored with 30 seconds to go and decided to go for two, but McNary stuffed it and held on to win 13-12 in Portland. McNary scored on a fumble return TD and the Scots returned the favor to tie the game at six going into halftime. Alex Hernandez had the other score for the Celtics with a rushing TD and he had 78 rushing yards.
Barlow took a sigh of relief in a 28-21 win on the road over Hood River Valley. Trailing 28-14, the Eagles scored with less than a minute to go, then recovered the onside kick with eight seconds left. On the last play of the game, Davin Snyder took a bubble screen and raced toward the end zone, but was pushed out of bounds at the 5-yard line to end the game.
Abedi Birindwa had a rushing TD to help Clackamas take out McMinnville 35-7.
5A
No. 1 Silverton put up an impressive win by blanking 6A No. 5 Grants Pass in the second half of the Foxes’ 35-10 win. Keysean Davis and Levi Schurter each had 92 rushing yards with the latter scoring twice. Luke Horner nearly had all the receiving yards at 126 and caught a TD. Zachary Purdy had an interception and fumble recovery on defense.
No. 2 Mountain View and 6A South Medford were tied at seven going into halftime, but it was all Cougars in the second half to pull out the 35-7 win. Liam Wheir tossed all three of his TDs in the second half, two of them to Robbie Capers, while Ryder Carpenter finished with 108 rushing yards and a TD.
After the game was tied at 14 at halftime, No. 5 West Albany got just enough to take out visiting Milwaukie 34-28. Pena Moors had a TD run and a TD pass in the first half, then scored in the second half to put the Bulldogs up 34-21 where they hung on for the win.
No. 6 Dallas racked up 302 total yards and held Newberg to 219 in the Dragons’ 34-7 win over the Tigers. Dallas also had one INT on defense.
No. 9 Ridgeview continues to make statements, moving to 3-0 with a 36-15 upset win over No. 7 Canby. Callen Schaefer scored once on the ground and once through the air while Bronx Lick and Lucas Geaslin each chipped in a TD.
After trailing 13-2 at halftime, Forest Grove found the end zone three times and kept Century off the board in a 21-13 Vikings win. QB Adler Case had 255 passing yards and two TDs while Erin Blackwell returned a fumble recovery for a 40-yard TD to round out the scoring, one of three fumbles recovered by Blackwell on the night who also made the tackle for the first-half safety.
Liberty went up 21-7 at halftime and didn’t look back in a 42-21 win over Beaverton. Gabriel Lesperance was the catalyst on offense with 131 rushing yards and two TDs. Parker Muncy had a rushing TD as well as a pick-six on defense to open the second half, one of five turnovers for the Falcons.
Putnam snapped a 29-game losing streak with a 42-14 win over Centennial. QB Cooper Lemen threw for 303 yards and three TDs, two of them to Dean Kost who also had 144 yards receiving. Rylan Stewart had 159 yards receiving, including a 92-yard TD catch and run to open the game.
Crescent Valley scored once in each quarter and then twice in OT to take out 4A No. 4 Marist Catholic 42-35 in double overtime. Marist led 28-14 at the break but was shutout in the second half before scoring once in OT.
A blocked field goal and six turnovers helped Redmond survive 27-26 over 4A Pendleton/Nixyaawii. The Buckaroos made a field goal in the final moment, but it was waived off due to a penalty and the ensuing second try was blocked.
Three rushing touchdowns by Jack Whitacre in the second, third and fourth quarter sealed the 28-14 win for Lebanon over Gresham. Whitacre finished with 215 rushing yards to go with the three scores and he also had an interception on defense.
Roseburg ran out the clock to preserve a 20-14 win over Bend. The Lava Bears pulled within six with a little over seven minutes to go, but Roseburg ran the ball 10 consecutive plays and simply ran the clock to zero. Leto White led that ground game with 134 yards rushing.
Caldera’s offense couldn’t be stopped in a 66-21 win over North Eugene. Running back Waylon Clarke ran for 330 yards and four TDs on only 15 carries while QB Preston Green threw for 153 yards and five TDs.
Brayden Wichersheim tossed three TDs and Khamani James ran in a couple as Springfield blanked Corvallis 34-0. Tyler Rasmussen had an interception and fumble recovery on defense as the Millers had four total turnovers to help pitch the shutout.
La Salle Prep moved to 2-0 with a 26-6 win over Hillsboro. Drake Benner got most of the yards with 112 on the ground while QB Nate McCoy tossed two TDs. Dom Delucia ran in a score and had an interception on defense.
South Albany came back from a 20-6 deficit to defeat Crook County 32-20. Damitri Ukaoma ran for 164 yards and four touchdowns to spur the comeback.
4A
Jacoby Gettman and Bryson Walker handled most of the scoring for No. 1 Cascade Christian in a 47-0 win over North Bend. Gettman had 206 yards passing with three TDs and Walker had 151 yards on the ground with three scores.
No. 3 Banks went up 17-0 and hung on for a 17-13 win over No. 8 Central. Jaic Lamb led the Braves with 138 rushing yards and a score while Conor Bergin had two interceptions, one returned for a TD, to help put Banks ahead. Central had the ball inside the 10-yard line to close the game, but couldn’t cross the goal line.
No. 5 Estacada took care of business with a 42-14 win over Astoria. The Rangers had six total rushing TDs, three coming from Dane Carpenter and two from Ashton Randall, with the pair also combining for 265 yards. Thomas Classen also had 104 rushing yards and a score while Randall also contributed 13 tackles and an interception on defense.
No. 6 Henley scored twice in the fourth quarter to steal a 13-12 win over 5A Crater. Jacob Higgins hit Kacie Palmer first to cut the deficit to 12-6, then Derrick Cox caught the next TD and the PAT was made to win 13-12.
No. 7 Scappoose bounced back from a loss to Cascade Christian last week with a 42-14 win over No. 10 Junction City. QB Will Kessi threw two TDs, both to Dexter Olson, while Colton Smith led the ground game with 78 yards and two scores.
No. 9 Marshfield fell just short in a 33-27 loss to Eureka (CA). Jackson Herbert had 152 rushing yards with two scores while QB Nicoya Pruess had 158 passing yards and two TDs. The Pirates came up with three turnovers on defense as well.
Tillamook got into the win column with a gritty 29-25 road win over La Grande. QB Kevin Hurliman found his rhythm with 290 passing yards and three TDs, two of them going to Eli Wootton with 104 receiving yards. Carson Remington had 132 receiving yards and the other score along with a pick on defense. Ryan Garcia also came up with an INT and recovered a fumble on defense for the Cheesemakers.
Philomath needed a late-game score to take out 3A Coquille 34-30. The Red Devils took their first lead at 30-27 with less than eight minutes in the game. The Warriors worked their way down the field and on fourth-down from the Coquille 1-yard line, scored on a Mason Bennett run. QB AJ Altishin had two passing TDs in the first quarter to Kaden Howard.
Stayton controlled the second half in a 34-14 win over Seaside. Stayton raced out to an early 14-0 lead and led 21-14 at halftime before shutting out the Seagulls in the second half.
Baker survived in a 28-20 win over Molalla. QB Quin Wellman threw for 213 yards and four TDs, two of them to Joseph Warbis who also had 103 receiving yards and an interception on defense.
Woodburn scored all 17 points in the fourth quarter to comeback and take out The Dalles 17-13.
3A
No. 2 Kennedy was up 32-0 at halftime and quickly triggered the running clock in the second half when Reggie Ifenuk returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown in a 39-6 win over Elmira. Jaden Traeger had two rushing TDs with 85 yards.
No. 3 Burns ran through 4A Ontario en route to a 48-0 victory. Talmage Gahley had 67 rushing yards and three TDs while Cannon Kemper was right behind with 58 yards and two TDs.
No. 7 Scio pulled off the upset over No. 4 Santiam Christian with a 37-13 victory. Colton Medeiros scored twice on the ground and QB Arley LeBard tossed two TDs and ran for 150 yards and one more score.
No. 5 Klamath Union is 3-0 for the first time since 2011 with a 42-0 route of 5A McKay. QB Reese Johnson had 213 passing yards with three TDs while Henry Fore had two picks on defense, one returned for a TD, and Jayden White had 2.5 sacks. Fore also led in receiving with 71 yards and caught a TD pass.
Eden Cardoza and Josh Filipi each scored to help No. 7 Sutherlin take out 4A North Valley 19-6.
Kai Davis continues to be a one-man wrecking crew for No. 9 Pleasant Hill, as seen in a 48-25 win over North Marion. Davis had 187 rushing with four TDs, and also had 139 receiving yards with another score. Wylie Blake threw for 215 yards with two TDs.
Douglas came up with four interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense to stall out South Umpqua in a 20-14 Trojans win. Caiden Maresh had two of the picks along with 96 yards receiving and two TDs on offense. The other two came from Kellen Little while Jaden Burkhart had 74 yards rushing and returned that fumble recovery for a TD.
Matthew Humbert led McLoughlin to a huge home win over 5A St. Helens by a score of 34-20. Humbert ran for 126 yards and two scores while also picking up an INT on defense. Dallen Duncan rushed for 127 yards and had 8.5 tackles and a forced fumble on defense.
It was a 14-0 ball game at halftime before Dayton pulled away in the second half to take out Yamhill-Carlton 35-0.
Braxton Henager ran in a touchdown to put Harrisburg up 14-0 and a blocked punt helped power the Eagles to a 40-0 win over Creswell.
Umatilla opened its season with a 28-0 blanking of 2A Riverside. Linkin Zamudio ran for 175 yards and Xzavier Rodriguez tossed two TDs in the win.
2A
No. 1 Heppner cruised once more with a 52-6 road win over Clatskanie. The Mustangs led 40-0 with seven minutes to go before halftime. Tripp Stewart led the ground game with 99 yards of the 306 the Mustangs tallied between 12 different ball carriers.
No. 5 St. Paul bounced back strong from a loss last week to Heppner with a blowout of No. 2 Lost River 37-0. The Buckaroos won the yardage battle 362-56, most of that going to Bricen Britton on the ground with 130 yards rushing and a TD. St. Paul also came away with three interceptions on defense.
No. 6 Glide let a few touchdowns score late, but it didn’t matter much in the 46-21 win over Rogue River. QB Thomas Viaene had 212 passing yards with three TDs and Colt Skinner ran for 117 yards. Collin Groth caught two of those TDs and had 115 receiving yards, and also ran in a score. Xavier Cafferata had four sacks, Josh Scott and Aaron Hill each had three sacks, and Scott had 10 tackles.
Knappa took a 13-8 lead, but No. 7 Myrtle Point scored the final 16 points to take home a 24-13 win.
Kaison Acker scored the first TD of a shootout with Monroe/Alsea, setting the tone for a 48-30 win for Regis.
Colton led 51-7 at halftime and cruised to a 57-14 victory over Central Linn.
Gold Beach held on to win 36-20 over Weston-McEwen. The TigerScots pulled within 28-20 after the third quarter, but a fourth quarter score from the Panthers secured the victory.
1A 8-man
No. 2 Imbler took out 2A Enterprise 56-12 behind another standout game from Wyatt Yancey. He had two rushing TDs and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a third score. Caden Rasmussen chipped in two rushing TDs and Paden Phelps threw two TDs.
No. 5 Perrydale was led by the Eichlers in a 66-26 win over Chiloquin. Landon Eichler had 170 rushing yards with five TDs, along with 17 tackles on defense and an INT. Eli Eichler had three sacks on defense to go with seven tackles. Broden Ferguson also had 115 rushing yards with two scores and caught a TD pass.
No. 6 North Douglas ran for 302 yards and had six different players score seven touchdowns in a 58-6 win over Riddle. Brogan Luke led the way with 112 rushing yards and a TD while Chase Cyr tossed three TDs. On defense, Blake Reed had two sacks.
No. 7 Camas Valley rolled in a 60-14 win over 1A 6-man No. 4 Powers. Luke Baker threw for 221 yards and five TDs while also rushing for two more scores. Tannon Wolfe caught two of those TDs while also posting 121 receiving yards on just two catches.
Powder Valley upset No. 9 Elgin in a shootout, taking home the win 48-42. Brand Bingham threw for 210 yards for the Badgers with two TDs and also ran for 148 yards and two more scores. Tycen Gray ran wild as well with 230 yards rushing and two TDs. PV converted on all of its two-point attempts while it stuffed all of Elgin’s attempts in the six-point win.
Echo controlled the game with Pilot Rock/Ukiah to the tune of a 48-0 win. Owen Stafford ran for two touchdowns while Elden Miller did damage through the air with 235 yards and a TD.
1A 6-man
No. 2 Elkton cruised in a 41-14 win over No. 8 Dayville/Monument/Long Creek. Talon Harvey had 277 rushing yards with three TDs and caught one more score, and also had a pick on defense. Carson Peters had two interceptions on defense.
No one can stop AJ Rourke-Smith as the running back helped No. 3 Ione/Arlington run by No. 7 Griswold in a 41-21 win. The RB had 314 rushing yards with four scores to lead the effort and started passing the ball as well, picking up 108 yards through the air. Will McElligot had a big fourth-quarter interception for the Cardinals to secure the game.
It was the Aiden De Leon show as No. 5 Crow handled Triangle Lake 54-19. The RB rushed for 301 yards and five TDs to guide the Crow victory.
Joe Young had two receiving TDs and 115 total yards of offense, along with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery on defense to help Days Creek blank Falls City 34-0. Jonathan Morris had 12 tackles and Jayden Young had 94 rushing yards and a TD.
