South Eugene senior Yosuke Shibata, the reigning 6A boys cross country champion, opened his 2026 season with a dramatic victory Saturday morning.
Shibata turned on the jets in the last 500 meters to surge past the lead pack and win the prestigious Nike Bob Firman Invitational in Spokane. He clocked a personal-best 14 minutes, 28.0 seconds to overtake Gonzaga Prep (Wash.) sophomore Miro Parr-Coffin by four-tenths of a second.
Shibata, who missed South Eugene's first meet due to discomfort in his Achilles and wasn't available for the second meet because he was on a college visit, showed that he is ready to defend his title.
“It was a heck of an opener,” Axe coach Jeff Hess said. “I knew he was fit and ready to have a good race, but I think he surprised us both by how good it was. He wasn't tracking to run quite that fast, but he had to because the competition was really tough.”
Shibata rold RunnerSpace that because his focus is on the postseason, whatever happened Saturday wasn't going to define him. But he was happy with his performance.
“Today I was expecting anywhere from a slow 14:45 to the fast end, a bit under 14:35,” said Shibata, the 1,500 champion in the 6A track meet last season. “Being able to smash 14:30 and just break those barriers has been really kind of an eye-opener. I'm super grateful that that was able to happen.”
The top six of the 268-runner field finished in a 10-second span. Shibata and Parr-Coffin (14:28.4) were followed by Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) junior Wyatt Morgenstern (14:30.4), Summit senior Bjorn Blankenship (14:32.3), Shorewood (Wash.) senior Elijah Graves (14:36.0) and Summit junior Clayton Jero (14:38.1).
A half-dozen runners broke away at the 3,000 mark, and shortly after 4,000, Parr-Coffin made a strong move to the front. With about 600 to go, Parr-Coffin led by about 15 seconds.
Shibata made his move from the back of the lead pack with about 500 left. He overtook Parr-Coffin about 10 meters before the finish line and held on to win.
“It was super bold,” Hess said of Shibata's late rush. “He was utterly spent at the end. He spent a good amount of time on the ground. It was a terrific effort for him, a really nice way to start the season.”
Hess said that Shibata's closing speed has room for improvement, but he was encouraged to see him forced to pour it on late. He has been working with Shibata to prepare for such scenarios rather than running from the front.
“Just having the confidence to stay back in the pack and move more decisively at the end, this is really the first time that he got to execute that,” Hess said. “He did it at the state meet last year, for sure, but this was a little bit different because the pace was really hot throughout.
“It said a lot about his competitiveness and fitness being on a good place for now.”
Add Bob Firman Invitational
Summit won the boys team race at Bob Firman, outscoring runner-up Coeur d'Alene 64-128 to top 38 teams. The Storm's scorers were Blankenship, Jero, senior Charlie English (12th), junior Landon Kjorstad (13th) and senior Hudson Boaz (34th).
South Eugene junior Khalil Sabzalian placed 14th in 14:54.0, breaking the 15-minute mark for the first time.
South Eugene sophomore Eva Johnson Hess was the top Oregon girl in the meet, taking ninth place in 17:37.4. Senior Morgan Delaney of Polson (Mont.) won in 17:11.2.
Johnson Hess ran with the lead group at 2,500 and was three seconds behind at 3,000 but dropped off the pace after getting a sideache.
“She was totally in control, looking very, very strong and comfortable, until that stitch grabbed a hold of her and wouldn't let her breathe,” Jeff Hess said. “For her to hang on as well as she did after that was really quite impressive.”
Nike Portland XC
North Eugene senior Ashenafi McKinnis claimed his third victory in as many races this season by taking the Danner Championship boys title at Nike Portland XC on Saturday at Blue Lake Park in Fairview.
McKinnis finished in 14:39.7 to beat junior William Thompson (14:42.1) of La Serna (Calif.). Marist Catholic senior Corbin Sage was third in 14:55.2.
Crescenta Valley (Calif.) won the 32-team boys division with 155 points. Grant and Franklin were next with 172 and 175, respectively.
In the Danner girls race, West Linn junior Eleanor Wyatt was the highest placer from Oregon by finishing sixth in 17:44.1. Sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez of St. Francis (Calif.) won in 17:06.9.
ThunderRidge (Colo) won the girls team title, outscoring runner-up St. Francis 89-98.
