Highlights from Week 1 football games around the state on Thursday-Saturday: 

6A

Grants Pass built a 14-0 lead on North Medford and hung on for a 21-18 victory at home, getting head coach Matt Kennedy’s first win. Junior QB Jordan Rossetta threw for 230 yards and one TD, junior RB Treyton Powers had 82 yards rushing and a TD, and sophomore James Traylor had five catches for 148 yards. … Hunter Vaughn scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one on a 65-yard punt return, to help No. 7 Willamette breeze by South Medford 34-7. Zeke Thomas added three passing TDs for the Wolverines, one each to Kawai Chamberlin, Brady Barry and Tony Cumberland. … North Salem RB Jakai Phillips put the team on his back with six total touchdowns, five rushing and one kickoff return, to help the Vikings down crosstown rival South Salem 49-32. Braxton Single had a kickoff return TD as well for the Vikings, meanwhile Wongani Schlegel found the endzone four times to try and keep the Saxons in it.

No. 5 Nelson struggled out east, falling to Timberline (ID) 43-15. Timberline wideout Hudson Lewis had seven catches for 193 yards and four scores, meanwhile the Hawks scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and hit a field goal in the first half. … Franklin scored a late touchdown to push its matchup with David Douglas into overtime tied at 19, then won in the second OT period on a 22-yard field goal from Max Stambaugh. Malakai Fong had two touchdowns for the Scots. … 6A Lincoln picked up a 39-21 road win over 5A La Salle Prep. The Cardinals had a couple big plays, one coming from junior Reed Eldridge returning a punt for a TD and the other being a 70+ yard run from senior Finn Davies. Junior Leo Correani scored a touchdown and so did Greyson Murff to round out the scoring for Lincoln.

LaMarcus Bell returned for No. 1 Lake Oswego and scored three rushing TDs in the Lakers’ 51-7 victory over No. 8 Sheldon. QB Hudson Kurland had 133 total yards with a rushing TD and passing TD, Jalen Bauman had a 43-yard punt return and Sam Vyhlidal had two sacks, one going for a safety. … Liberty pitched a shutout to take down Barlow 14-0. Mehki Perry had a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter and Jaxon Rekow had a 31-yard TD run in the third to cap the scoring for the Eagles, meanwhile Ethan Hopper had 119 total rushing yards. … After an injury to Washington-commit RB Ansu Sanoe, No. 9 Lakeridge’s Colby Owen stepped up and finished with 144 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Pacers to a 33-14 win over Mountainside. … Sunset spotted Tigard 20 points, but came back to win 49-45. QB Marcus Hahm threw for 312 yards and one TD, and also ran the ball 21 times for 127 yards and five rushing TDs. Griffin Ellingson caught the TD pass, went for 152 yards through the air and had a pick-six. Tigard head coach Todd Crist left the game at the start of the second half due to a “medical event” but was later released from the hospital. 

Adler Case threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns in 5A Forest Grove’s blanking of 6A Century 35-0. … No. 3 Central Catholic took down Central Catholic (CA) down south in Modesto, California 36-22. Rams senior QB Robbie Long had three TD passes, hauling them in were TE Seager Milholen, wideout Talon Sosky and WR Dayvion Curtis. Senior Cole Thomas also had a pick-six on the defensive side, and the final score came from senior RB Tyson Davis on the ground. … Owen Hagerman threw two touchdowns, which proved to be the difference to help No. 4 Tualatin down No. 6 Jesuit 13-7. The Timberwolves had a goal-line stand in the second quarter and three red-zone stops in the second half to hang on for the win.

Westview rolled to a 40-0 win over McMinnville. QB Charlie Barton had 222 yards passing with two touchdowns, Xander Kekaualua had 74 yards rushing with two TDs, and Tahkai Smith had 103 receiving yards with a score. …6A Newberg did just about everything in a 50-12 win over 5A Canby. Chase Macken, Parker Sellner and Ethan Hein all had rushing touchdowns, and Sellner hit Hein for a receiving TD. Macken and Deaken Santrizos each had a pick-six, and Hein had a 90-yard kickoff return. AJ Thomas added in a blocked punt for good measure. … Clackamas picked up four turnovers and lit up the scoreboard in a 58-36 win over Ida B. Wells. The Guardians still had 476 rushing yards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cavaliers’ onslaught of their own. … Oregon City couldn’t be stopped through the air as QB Kaeden Emerson threw for 456 yards and five TDs in a 34-7 win over Grant. Cavan Rogers made 13 catches for 210 yards and a score, and fellow wideout Colin Smith caught 13 more passes for 136 yards and two TDs.

5A

5A No. 1 Wilsonville hung on to beat 6A Sandy 34-27, despite 250 passing yards from Pioneers QB Machiah Turrin. Caden McMahon turned in two rushing touchdowns for Sandy as well. … 5A Crater took down 6A Southridge 29-8 thanks to three touchdown passes from Trey Smith. Smith found Terrius Allen for a 63-yard score on the Comets’ first offensive snap, then hit Andrew Smith on an untimed down to end the first half and go up 15-8 at the break. … 5A Parkrose got its first season-opening win since 2014 with a 32-12 victory over 6A Cleveland. Senior transfer Tranden Stricker filled in at QB and threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 87 yards and two more touchdowns. He had an interception on defense as well.

Ridgeview ran for 265 yards as a team en route to a 35-0 win over McNary. Ty Stevens had 94 yards and two TDs, meanwhile the defense had eight tackles for loss and three turnovers. … Chase Dominguez threw three more TD passes for No. 2 Silverton as the Foxes rolled to a 35-6 victory over No. 5 Thurston. Keysean Davis had a 61-yard rushing TD and Nolan Horner made it 35-0 in the second half with a three-yard TD run. … Ryder Carpenter scored three rushing touchdowns in No. 3 Mountain View’s big 42-0 win over No. 9 Lebanon. The Cougars also got a pick-six in the game and Angel Valenzuela added 75 rushing yards and one TD, along with four sacks on defense. … No. 3 Summit rushed for four touchdowns, two from Dylan Hughes, in a 42-7 victory over Roseburg. QB Andrew Guthrie threw for 167 yards and one score as well.

No. 8 Dallas used three turnovers and a balanced offensive attack to take down No. 7 Churchill 30-6. Jace Emerson had two of the interceptions, meanwhile on offense, Thomas Hess threw for 158 yards and two TDs. Landon Holbrook and Aidan Galusha each had a rushing TD. … Tyson Walker had a pick-six for No. 6 West Albany in the Bulldogs’ 22-14 win over visiting Bend. That was the score heading into the fourth where the Bulldogs were able to hang tight on defense and secure the win. Beau Harvey and Godcrey Conn had the other two scores for West Albany.

Corvallis’ Elijah Lundeen threw two early touchdown passes and RB Nate Bedford had an 88-yard score, one of his three, to lead the Spartans to a 48-21 win over North Eugene. … Eagle Point freshman QB Laiden Johnson threw his first career touchdown pass, but that was all it could muster in a 26-6 loss on the road to Yreka (CA).

4A

4A Marshfield took care of business in a 45-22 win over 3A No. 5 Siuslaw. QB Enoch Niblett threw two TDs and ran for two more with 241 total yards between the air and ground. Lane Olsen had 66 yards rushing and two TDs. … Brody Mahon rushed for 193 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Kellan Lee threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns in his first high school start as Mazama won the 47th annual Canal Bowl, 34-19, over Klamath Union. QB Reese Johnson kept the Pelicans in it with 357 passing yards and three TD passes. … Kevin Hurliman threw two touchdown passes and Joshua Manns scored twice on the ground to lift No. 5 Tillamook to a 35-21 victory at home over No. 3 Marist Catholic. Griffyn Boomer caught both TD passes and Aden Camacho Garcia added 91 rushing yards.

QB Will Kessi threw for 195 yards and four TDs in a 48-0 No. 4 Scappoose win over Baker. Elijah Greenan-Biggs had 91 rushing yards and a TD and Shawn Hensley had two interceptions on the defensive side. … No. 6 Stayton moved to 2-0 thanks to a 27-0 shutout of Astoria. Wyatt Kerrigan and Wyatt Fred each had a touchdown run while QB Madden Hughes had a 71-yard TD pass to Hunter Mollerstrom and Hughes had a 1-yard TD run. … Ontario pulled away for a 35-13 victory over McLoughlin after the game went into the fourth quarter with the score at 20-13 in favor of the Tigers.

Del Norte (CA) pulled away late from Ashland in a 42-13 victory. The score was only 7-0 Del Norte at the break and 21-7 entering the fourth quarter. … Rocco De La Rose did it all for No. 10 Philomath in a 49-0 victory over Newport. The senior had three receiving touchdowns, a 52-yard punt return TD and a 72-yard pick-six to lead the Warriors. … Duey Stephens caught a touchdown pass in Crescent Valley’s 27-3 victory over Woodburn. … CJ Dugas had an interception, and two plays later scored from more than 60 yards out on a run to help power Cottage Grove past North Marion 34-14.

3A

3A No. 4 Vale led 4A No. 7 La Grande 17-0 at halftime and held off the Tigers for the 27-14 victory. … Pleasant Hill tied the game at 21 late against Sutherlin, but the Bulldogs faked a run play and QB Dane Flora hit Drevan Hoggatt wide open down the field for the game-winning score. Josh Filipi picked off a pass in the endzone to seal the Sutherlin victory 28-21. … Ben Cam caught a touchdown pass from Frank Ojeda as Gervais ran away with a 40-6 win on the road at Creswell.

Bryson Walker ran for three rushing touchdowns to lead No. 3 Cascade Christian past Douglas 42-6. Caleb Scaglione had a 59-yard punt return TD and a rushing TD to help the effort, along with a 10-yard rush TD from Mikey Covey. … No. 1 Burns got an efficient passing night from Jack Wright in a 38-6 win over Sisters. The QB threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way on offense. Coltin Miller was the top target with 182 yards on seven catches with three TDs. … Jarrett Martin accounted for five touchdowns to power No. 2 Banks to a 41-14 win over No. 6 Santiam Christian. Four of them were receiving touchdowns from QB Nate Lyda and the fifth was a 30-yard pick-six. 

QB Alex Adams had one of the best performances of the week, throwing for 278 yards with five TDs in Valley Catholic’s 47-14 win over Blanchet Catholic. Sam Robbins was his top target with four catches for 129 yards and two TDs, and Robbins had two interceptions on defense. … An extra point made the difference in an Umatilla 7-6 win over Irrigon. The Knights scored in the first half on an 18-yard catch from Hayden Vera, but were stopped on the 2-point conversion attempt. In the second half, the Vikings’ Linkin Zamudio ran back the opening kickoff for good field position and scored from a yard out. Abrahan Garcia, a soccer player as well, kicked the PAT in what proved to be the winning point. … Kol Tolan hit Zach Hankins in the end zone as time expired to hand No. 9 Taft a 39-33 victory on the road at No. 10 Kennedy. Down 33-27 with 1:36 left in the game, the Trojans got a 75-yard score on a pass from Brody Panuke to Stephen Handran. But it left too much time as Taft used the remaining clock to march down the field for the walk-off winner. … No. 8 Dayton ran for 313 yards en route to a 33-6 win over Elmira. Stephen Macias led the attack with 126 yards and two TDs.

2A

No. 9 Bandon went up quick and took home a 49-0 win over Waldport. Bandon had seven rushing TDs as a team, three going to Hayden Thompson who also had an interception in the first half. … QB Cameren Higgins rushed for 133 yards and two TDs in Gold Beach’s comeback, 30-22 win over St. Mary’s Medford. The game was moved to St. Mary’s after construction on Gold Beach’s locker rooms wasn’t complete. Nolan Timeus chipped in two more rushing TDs and 123 yards as the Panthers came back from a 16-8 halftime deficit. … No. 3 Oakland took down No. 6 Lowell 32-26 thanks to a big night from Sheppard Brooksby. The junior ran for 201 yards and scored three TDs. Tanner Swearingen added an 84-yard pick-six to help make the difference.

No. 2 Heppner turned back No. 1 St. Paul 30-26 in what could have been a 2A state championship preview out east in the Dufur Classic. Caleb George ran for two touchdowns and caught one more for the Mustangs, and Alakae Rodriguez had 138 yards. … Santiam picked up its first win since October of 2022 with a 38-22 victory over Chiloquin.

1A 8-man

Isaiah Ibrahim scored four TDs on the ground to power Riddle to a 40-24 win over Yoncalla after the Eagles led 18-6 at halftime. … Caden Rasmussen had the game-winning TD in overtime to lead Imbler past Prairie City/Burnt River 32-26. Pedro Rivas also caught a TD pass from Paden Phelps to aid in the victory. No. 1 Adrian took care of No. 2 Crosspoint Christian in a 44-0 win on Saturday. Silvestre Rico Jr. had three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, out of the five the Antelopes had on the day.

No. 5 Union took down No. 4 Cove 72-8 with three touchdowns from KJ Klebaum, and two apiece from Dawson Miller and Jackson Davenport. … Easton Mast ran for 103 yards and a TD, and had 10 tackles and two sacks on defense to highlight No. 7 North Douglas’ 44-12 win over No. 8 Powder Valley. The Badgers didn’t score until the fourth quarter, meanwhile Jaycen Marois had a 59-yard TD run on his way to 134 rushing yards and had a pick-six.

1A 6-man

No. 2 Joseph went in a 52-0 win over No. 10 Ione/Arlington. Kooper Grover specifically had a night, rushing for 326 yards on 16 carries with three TDs, plus four catches for 158 yards and two more TDs. Jenning Scheifelbein had seven tackles on defense with two sacks to help pitch the shutout. … Elkton took a 19-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 57-13 upset win over No. 8 Alsea. Darwin Hudson threw for 337 yards and four TDs and Talon Harvey ran for 144 yards and three TDs.
