Highlights from Week 3 football games around the state on Thursday-Saturday:
6A
No. 1 Lake Oswego head coach Steve Coury picked up win No. 300 in dominant fashion as the Lakers took out No. 10 Sherwood 51-16. Wideout Griffin Ellingsen had four touchdowns on the night: two receiving, one rushing and one on an 80-yard kickoff return.
No. 2 West Linn controlled the game against intra-school district foe Wilsonville, the No. 4 team in 5A. The Lions went up 28-0 in the first quarter and eventually took home the 49-20 win.
Iden Rule keeps running for No. 3 Tualatin, this time for 164 yards and two TDs in a 43-0 Timberwolves win over 5A Milwaukie. Lincoln Keeney chipped in 141 passing yards and two TDs.
No. 5 Central Catholic QB Armani Tonga rushed for two scores in the fourth quarter, but it was too late for the Rams in a 41-14 loss to Graham Kapowsin (WA) who led 27-0 at halftime.
Grants Pass QB Jordan Rossetta returned to the field and helped the No. 6 Cavemen dominate Sprague in a 35-0 win. The QB threw for 252 yards and three TDs, 103 of those yards and two TDs to James Traylor. Matthew Bayard came up with two interceptions on defense.
West Salem scored on a trick play with less than 90 seconds to go in its 27-21 win on the road over No. 7 North Medford. The Black Tornado were able to get to the West Salem 23-yard line with 35 seconds to go, but a lost fumble sealed their fate.
Lakeridge used two late scores again, this time to turn away No. 8 Mountainside in a 34-22 win. The Pacers fell behind early in the fourth, but QB Carson Pickens hit wideout Jagger Salazar for a 71-yard TD – Salazar’s third of the night – and Colby Owen ran in a 23-yard TD on the next Pacers drive to post the 34-22 final.
No. 9 Willamette gashed Jesuit for 321 rushing yards in a 54-31 win. Jonny Jenkins had 164 of those yards along with a score. QB Zeke Thomas ran for two scores and had 126 passing yards with one more TD.
Grant led 35-0 at halftime and ran out the clock quickly in the second half to grab a 48-0 win over Franklin on the road.
Roosevelt won its home opener 40-14 over McDaniel behind four TD passes and one rushing TD from QB Marlan McCowan, who transferred from McDaniel to Roosevelt over the summer.
Jefferson got its first win of the year with a 47-0 blanking of Benson. QB DJ Edwards threw for 216 yards and a couple TDs while Elijah Matthews had three carries for three TDs on the ground.
Lincoln went up 44-0 at halftime as Greyson Murff had a pick-six on defense and a rushing TD to continue his rapid scoring pace against Cleveland. Antayus Wilkins leads the PIL in rushing yards and scored twice, and Leonardo Correani had two rushing TDs as well.
South Salem snuck by Century 27-22 thanks to 10 tackles from Bridger Haider and two interceptions by Sam Johnson. Saxons QB Kellen Bowman had 135 passing yards and two TDs.
5A David Douglas was within a score at halftime down 21-13, but Reynolds ran away with the second half in a 42-13 win. Josiah Jankins had 269 rushing yards for the Raiders along with three rushing TDs and 10.5 tackles on defense.
Kasen Saffer was loose again in an Oregon City 34-24 win over Newberg. The RB ran for 217 yards and three TDs to guide the offense while Ayden Scroggins had two picks for a defense that also came up with two sacks.
Tigard moved to 3-0 with a 43-13 win over Clackamas, led by QB Aris Dimick tossing three TDs and RB Taison Cepeda running for three more.
Adam Ellis scored the lone TD in a 7-0 McNary win over McKay. Alex Hernandez ultimately led the Celtics in rushing though with 96 yards on the ground.
Sunset scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull off the comeback win over 5A Liberty 45-44. Braxton Williams had an 11-yard TD run to get the Apollos within 44-38 and then Weston Buell hit Nolan Will for a 9-yard TD, and the PAT put Sunset ahead 45-44 for good.
Ida B. Wells went up 40-0 before the second quarter had barely begun in a dominant 58-12 win over McMinnville. Ethan Hoover scored twice while Toby Carrick had an interception on defense and Wyatt Hanifin recovered a fumble, his second consecutive week with a fumble recovery.
Westview outlasted Glencoe 24-21 behind a strong duo in the passing game. QB Hank Whitworth threw for 239 yards and a TD, most of that going to Tahkai Smith with 194 yards and the TD. Whitworth also had a rushing score.
Stephen Amadio did a little bit of everything to help Barlow survive 42-40 over North Salem. Amadio had 127 receiving yards with two TDs, and he also came up with a fumble recovery and an interception on defense.
5A
No. 1 Mountain View scored first, then it was all No. 5 Summit in the IMC clash that ended with a 24-7 Storm win. Summit led 13-7 at halftime and pushed it to 24-7 thanks to a field goal and QB Andrew Guthrie’s second TD pass of the night. Meanwhile, the defense held Cougars RB Ryder Carpenter to only 23 yards rushing.
No. 2 Silverton forced five turnovers en route to a 57-0 win over South Albany. Miles Mulick had two interceptions and Zachary Purdy had two rushing TDs on offense.
Beau Harvey rushed for a couple TDs to help No. 3 West Albany breeze by Corvallis 41-7.
Aidan Galusha ran for 113 yards and four touchdowns, and caught one score, to help No. 7 Dallas cruise by Lebanon 51-12.
No. 8 Thurston took home the rivalry win over Churchill 34-16 behind four touchdowns from QB Emmit Distefano, three passing and one rushing. The Lancers cut into the lead at 21-16 to open the third, but a big play from Leofatu Filipe on defense flipped momentum back to Thurston who closed out the win.
No. 9 Roseburg remains unblemished with a 33-14 road win over North Eugene. Roseburg ran for 282 yards as a team with five scores, most of that from Leto White who had 184 yards and two scores.
Owen Hudson ran in the game’s lone TD to help Canby take down No. 10 Sandy 6-3.
Springfield’s defense continued to stay hot in helping the Millers to a 21-7 win over Eagle Point, holding the Eagles to 2-for-8 on third down and 0-for-5 on fourth down. On offense, Khamani James ran for 60 yards and two TDs in the win.
Aloha took out former 6A Metro League foe Beaverton with a 50-0 victory. Jason Kwasnik tossed three TDs while Wyett Kaulia-Hooper and Rafael Sanchez Rojas each had a pick-six on defense.
Gresham went up 20-0 at halftime and held that margin in a 36-16 win over 6A Southridge. Gophers QB Owen Olson had a night with 244 passing yards and three TDs, as well as 9-yard TD run in the first half. Shod Martino caught two of the TDs and had 114 receiving yards.
Caldera held Bend in check to open IMC play with a 26-9 win. Waylon Clarke had a modest 169 yards rushing and one TD while QB Preston Green had 155 passing yards and a TD.
La Salle Prep moved to 3-0 with a 42-7 win over Putnam. QB Nate McCoy had 372 passing yards and two TDs to lead the Falcons offense, Luke Rask hauled in 109 of those yards.
Gabe Pannebaker set the table for Crescent Valley to feast on a 40-28 win over St. Helens. The RB had 175 rushing yards and two TDs, meanwhile QB Ryan Williams 156 passing yards with one TD, as well as three rushing scores. Will Hartstein had two picks on defense.
Forest Grove lit up the scoreboard quickly against Centennial, taking the 70-0 final score by the halftime break. Adler Case had 198 passing yards with four TDs, two to Blake Wert who had 113 receiving yards as well. Erin Blackwell had a fumble recovery returned for a TD.
Hood River Valley led 14-7 at the break and held 4A Pendleton/Nixyaawii in the second half to escape with a 26-13 win, the Eagles first of the season.
Hillsboro recovered a fumble on the first play of the game against Parkrose and took off from there in a 41-6 Spartans win. Jayden Cruz had two rushing TDs and Hudson Lowe had a 30-yard pick-six, meanwhile QB Carter Challinor had two passing TDs, including an 80-yard score that went to Sorne Olson.
4A
No. 1 Cascade had no worries in a 40-7 win over No. 8 Central. RB Wyatt Kerrigan ran for 120 yards and a TD while running mate Weston Shewell had 97 rushing yards and two TDs. The Cougars also blocked a Central field goal and returned it 98 yards for a score.
Jacoby Gettman tossed three TDs to Mikey Covey in the first quarter alone as No. 2 Cascade Christian blitzed No. 7 Marist Catholic 67-28. Blake Patereau had a fumble return for a TD as well in the first quarter. Gettman finished with 344 passing yards and five TDs, most of that going to Covey with 247 receiving yards and four TDs.
Nate Lyda 129 passing yards and three TDs, plus one rushing score, to help No. 3 Banks roll to a 48-0 win over Woodburn.
Derrick Cox scored on the ground to push No. 6 Henley to a 20-0 halftime lead and the Hornets rode that wave to a 32-6 win over Hidden Valley.
Sam Barringer scored twice early thanks to a couple interceptions by the No. 9 Sweet Home defense and the Huskies rolled to a 42-7 win over Junction City.
Brandon Wendelin had the touchdown and Max Johnston had the two-point conversion to give No. 10 Marshfield the drag-out 8-7 win over South Umpqua.
North Bend grabbed a 42-6 lead in the first half and rolled Cottage Grove 49-20.
Baker held 3A Umatilla to 73 yards of offense in a 54-6 Bulldogs victory. QB Quin Wellman threw for 195 yards and five TDs on the offensive side.
Philomath took a 35-6 lead into the break and coasted the rest of the way to a 35-18 win over Molalla. QB AJ Altishin had 308 yards passing with two TDs, as well as one rushing score. Kaden Howard had one rushing and one receiving TD and Bryce Hruska had one receiving TD and a pick on defense.
Ashland pitched the shutout and QB Colton Hernandez tossed four touchdowns to down North Valley 35-0. David Carter caught two of the TDs and Cole Iwamoto had another one. Logan Levorse had 10 tackles, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
Brody Mahon rushed for 205 yards and two TDs to help Mazama dispatch Phoenix 35-9.
3A
No. 1 Vale took down 4A La Grande 24-7 to continue looking like the 3A title favorite. Cal Johnson had 115 yards rushing while the defense was led by Calvin Longoni with two sacks and Rye Cummings with 10 tackles.
No. 3 Kennedy got to work early and ran away with a 42-0 win over Newport. QB Jaden Traeger tossed three TDs and ran for two more, finishing with 89 yards in both categories. Quinton Bruner caught two of the scores.
No. 5 Scio ran for 387 yards as a team in a 42-6 victory over Gervais. QB Arley LeBard had 136 of those yards with two TDs while the defense picked up two interceptions.
Amity was no match for No. 6 Sutherlin as the Bulldogs ran away with a 42-6 win. Braxton Gary had 139 yards passing with three touchdowns, Aaron Lepre caught three of those passes for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Eden Cardoza caught one score and rushed in another.
No. 7 Siuslaw/Mapleton and Elmira were scoreless at half, but the Vikings poured it on in the second half to win 36-12. QB Jericho Lake had three rushing TDs and threw for one more.
Dayton survived a thriller with No. 8 Pleasant Hill 35-32. After the Billies took their first lead of the game early in the fourth at 32-28, the Pirates scored again and held Pleasant Hill on twice on fourth down to run out the clock on the win.
No. 9 Douglas got a little bit of production from everywhere in a 36-18 win over Madras. QB AJ Black threw for 224 yards and two TDs, Jaden Burkhart rushed for two scores and the defense came up with three sacks and two interceptions.
No. 10 Harrisburg blanked Salem Academy 32-0. On offense, Braxton Henager ran for 219 yards and a TD, meanwhile Chase Herrera had two passing TDs, as well as 52 yards rushing and two more scores.
Dallen Duncan found the end zone four times to help McLoughlin run away from The Dalles in a 55-8 win. The Pioneers scored five TDs in the second frame to go up 42-0 at the break.
North Marion didn’t allow Horizon Christian Tualatin to score in the second half and took home the win 30-22. Ozzy Arnold had two rushing TDs and Landon Ashpole had 110 yards and a TD on the ground as well.
Aaron Neahring’s fumble-return TD helped spark a 16-7 win for Warrenton over Santiam Christian. The Warriors led 8-7 at the break and QB Dylan Ballard took it from there with 129 rushing yards and a scoring drive that ended with him tossing a TD to Emery Torres.
Brookings-Harbor scored twice in the fourth quarter to come back and beat St. Mary’s Medford 36-23. The Bruins trailed 23-22 after a Crusaders field goal, but Brookings-Harbor QB Grady Maylin tossed his fourth TD of the night – 61 yards to Kaedin Socia – and had a 22-yard TD run to put his team in the win column. Elias Haro caught the other three TDs and had 114 yards receiving.
2A
No. 1 Heppner is looking unbeatable with a 54-8 win over No. 5 Lost River to avenge last year’s 2A state title game. Alakae Rodriguez had 152 rushing yards and two TDs in the win.
No. 4 St. Paul hung on to its 24-6 halftime lead in what was ultimately a 51-36 win over Regis. Max Burns led the Buckaroos run game with 161 yards and two TDs, two of five total for St. Paul. JJ Hempfling had a pick on defense while Bricen Britton had 16 tackles and 85 yards rushing with a score on offense.
No. 7 Glide only led 8-6 going into the fourth, but pulled away in the final frame for a 32-24 win over Waldport. QB Tommy Viaene had 236 passing yards and two TDs, along with one rushing score. Spencer Sahr caught both touchdowns and had 105 receiving yards, along with seven tackles and a sack on defense.
Enterprise picked up a 38-26 win over 1A Perrydale, led by 240 rushing yards and two TDs from Nate Cameron.
Trailing 34-14, the gameplan was simple for Rainier: give the ball to Jayden Quevido. He finished with 401 rushing yards and five TDs to help the Columbians comeback and win 36-34 over Neah-Kah-Nie, including the game-winning two-pointer.
Clatskanie eventually pulled away in a 42-26 win over Nestucca. Twice Nestucca came back from two score deficits, but Landyn Winton wouldn’t be denied with three rushing TDs and a receiving TD for the Tigers, including two scores in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Knappa rode the legs of Oliver Stevens to a 35-7 win over Corbett. The RB ran for 300 yards and scored four of the Loggers’ five touchdowns.
1A 8-man
In a matchup between the reigning 8-man state champion and 6-man state champion, it was No. 1 Adrian taking care of business over No. 7 Harper Charter with a 64-12 win. Mannie Mulrony ran for 190 yards and two scores and Kash Morford was right behind with 189 yards and two TDs. Weston Bayes had a TD catch and two interceptions on defense.
No. 2 Imbler rolled once more in a 56-6 win over Joseph. Paden Phelps tossed three TDs with Carson Yancey catching one score and rushing for another.
No. 6 Camas Valley picked up win No. 4 on the year with a 56-18 victory over Riddle. QB Luke Baker had two passing and two rushing TDs while Tannon Wolfe had 142 yards rushing with two TDs.
Jeremias Calvillo had two kickoff-return TDs and a receiving score, but it wasn’t enough for Riverside to get by Vernonia, falling 60-20.
Elgin snapped its two-game losing streak with a 48-6 win over Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat. Weston Evans ran for 189 yards and four TDs while Garrett Bolen threw for 213 yards and tossed two scores to Waylon McClure.
Carter Watterson was the offense in Prairie City/Burnt River’s 36-26 win over Cove. The QB had 237 passing yards with a TD, and also ran for 213 yards and three more scores. Ritter Rookstool came up with three turnovers alone for the defense, picking up two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Pilot Rock/Ukiah is into the win column with a 60-30 smashing of Touchet (WA). QB Nathan Endersby threw for 320 yards and four TDs while TayVen Warren had a great all-around game with one rushing TD, one receiving and two interceptions on defense.
1A 6-man
AJ Rourke-Smith continues to be unstoppable with 300 more yards rushing and four more rushing TDs to help No. 3 Ione/Arlington take down Wallowa 56-13.
Landon McBroom scored twice in the second quarter and the No. 4 North Lake defense held high-powered No. 5 Crow in check for a 25-12 win. McBroom had 127 rushing yards while Evan Grassman had 171 on the ground with a score. Chris Anderson recovered two of four fumbles for the Cowboys.
No. 6 Griswold got back into the win column with a 41-25 win over No. 10 Condon. Kaiden Matye threw four TDs while Camp Kinnemen had 102 receiving yards and four TD grabs. Lyle Peck did damage on the ground with 181 rushing yards and a TD, and the defense was led by two interceptions from Cameron Makin.
For the first time in 10 years, Days Creek was able to turn back No. 6 Powers with a 31-27 win. Powers went up 13-0, but Days Creek scored the next 26 points and held on from there with two of those scores being TD runs from Joe Young. Lucious Young had a night on defense with 12 tackles, two caused fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Avery Burgess ran wild in a shootout between Falls City and Country Christian, ultimately won by the Mountaineers 61-43. Burgess 33 carries for 453 rushing yards and four TDs, meanwhile his running mate Daniel Arismendez also had four rushing TDs. Burgess also had four sacks on defense.
